This is a beautifully laid out cottage, but it wasn’t for me. We had booked to stay here for the week, but I couldn’t do it as it just made me feel too claustrophobic. It is cosy, but too dark & enclosed for me. We had to find somewhere else to stay. Just beware, really.
Many people have stayed here (I looked in the visitors book) & have been perfectly happy here. I couldn’t fault the quality of the furnishings & the decor etc. - it’s top quality.
Christine, the owner, was very sorry as was I. I shall just put it down to experience.

lovely cute cottage
This is a well laid out small cottage, in very good order and has everything you need. Its in a lovely heritage village. There are steep steps to bedrooms but you just need to organise yourself so you dont make too many journeys, it also benefits from a downstairs toilet.

Home comforts
The cottage is a great base for getting about the Peak District.There is a lovely welcoming pub within walking distance called the boat inn,food is good and everyone is friendly.The chipshop called habibs is good and does a delivery service.Well about the cottage whatever I say will not be enough for what Christine the owner as put into it,she as thought of everything down to a little torch hanging on the door.Yes the stairs are steep but worth climbing them to get into the lovely bed linen provided!! There is everything in this cottage you will need and it is all of quality.Like being at home.Christine the owner is great,contacted her on the first evening saying TV was not working.The following morning she was there and when we got back that day she had provided a new TV.Can't get any better than that.Once again a lovely cottage and very clean.

Home from home in great location
Visiting in one of the hottest weeks of the year this wonderfully homely rental was perfect, the thick stone walls offering a cool respite from the outside!
Booking via Trip Advisor was a breeze and the communication throughout was excellent, no question unanswered.
The home has been refurbished and finished to an excellent standard and the pictures are truly representative of the home. Very clean on arrival and we wanted for nothing during the stay, the kitchen in particular has everything you could need for dining in for as long as you wish to stay.
2 terraces to the rear enjoy ample sunshine throughout the day and we used both during our stay. Both are accessed by some fairly uneven stone steps from the back door so may not be easily accessible for everyone.
Similarly the interior stairs to the first and second floors are very steep so may cause some a problem but we became accustomed to it during the week. That said we based ourselves on the top floor adjacent to the bathroom to avoid any chance of accident whilst visiting the bathroom half asleep in the night!
Excellent shower with towels and limited shower gel provided, you’ll need to remember your own shampoo though.
The home is situated as part of a terrace on an A road running into the centre of Cromford, whilst not ‘busy’ the road does experience a fair amount of traffic including HGVs shuttling in and around local quarries. This is he only reason I’d say we’re unlikely to use this rental again when visiting the area... the traffic (however limited) started moving around 4am and whilst the walls are very thick the windows are not. We we awoken early every day by passing vehicles, if any further investment could be made in the home it would be in improved glazing or secondary glazing to limit the traffic noise. We do live in a quiet area normally and would say that we are more sensitive to noise than most so obviously this needs to be taken into consideration.
The house is situated really well for exploring the Peak District. Cromford itself is a lovely place with lots to explore, the Mills, Canal and local pubs are worth sampling! Carsington Water is only a short distance away and you are located directly on the High Peak trail for longer walks into the Dales. The train station is a short walk away should you want to use to travel without use of car, bike or foot, we used to hop down the track (2 mins) to Matlock Bath to visit the Heights of Abraham.
It’s a great property and we had a lovely week, only a few more hours sleep would have made it perfect.

Thank you so very much for taking the time to write such a comprehensive review following your stay at my property. I'm so glad you enjoyed your week. I tried to make the cottage as homely as possible - and provide the sort of things I would like to find in a holiday cottage, so I'm glad to hear you liked it.
Regarding the shower gel - I've actually now changed the provision to larger quantities located in the shower room. Partly as a result of your feedback but also for environmental factors. Regarding provision of shampoo - oddly enough I used to provide it but guests very rarely used it so decided it was a bit of a waste.
Thanks also for your comments regarding noise. Unfortunately as the cottage is Grade II listed, I'm not able to have double glazing fitted. However, I have had secondary glazing installed and with that plus the venetian blinds and curtains, I had hoped that any noise from traffic would be minimal. I am a very light sleeper and it hasn't disturbed my sleep when I've stayed there, but I accept that if you are used to a particularly quiet environment, it may have been a concern, so sorry if it disturbed your sleep.

Lovely Welcoming Cottage
We stayed in this cute cottage for 3 nights and it was a pleasure to come home each day to the cozy surroundings. Comfortable beds and sofas, brilliantly equipped with everything you could want and super clean. The steep stairs were the only downside but once experienced, were OK to manage and didn't put us off or detract from the charm!

Perfect place for a break!
34 Water Lane was originally an 18th Century mill workers cottage with only three rooms on three floors. There would have been no running water, no kitchen, and presumably no toilet facilities.............fast forward nearly 250 years and how things have changed! The original occupants could never have imagined what has been done to the house. Still mainly laid out as it was it now boasts all mod cons including a decent sized bathroom on the top floor, a downstairs cloakroom/ toilet, and a lovely kitchen extension. There is a log burner for those cosy evenings in and Chris (the owner) has thought of everything.
When we arrived the place was immaculate, with a lovely cosy lounge, the first floor bedroom has an enormous king sized bed, and the top floor bedroom is light and airy with a good sized double bed.
From the moment we arrived we felt at home and at peace. Surprisingly for a building of this age there are no creaking floorboards, and it’s easy for the person(s) in either bedroom to get up and move around without disturbing the others.
There is a TV although we chose not to use it, but instead sat in the lounge with the log burner going and reading our books. WiFi is also provided and seems to be a fast connection.
I can think of no bad points for this place. The only worry I had was parking my car on the main road, but I needn’t have given it a thought, as there is off road parking a very short walk away. The road itself quietens down at night, and the secondary double glazing means that traffic noise is never an issue anyway.
One thing to be aware of is that this historic building was built to the standards of the 1780’s so the stairs are a little steeper than we modern folk are used to. Other than that it is a warm comfortable clean cosy place that I would recommend very highly.

Cosy cottage. Gluten free village.
It was obvious from the moment we walked through the door that this cosy cottage was of a very high standard. The kitchen was well equipped and seemed to have everything we needed. The log burner was a welcoming warmth after a days exploring the dales in the January weather. The television was adequate in size for the room but, as most modern slim TV's, the sound quality was poor and perhaps could be improved with a sound bar. The bed on the 1st floor was described by Marie as one of the most comfortable she had slept in, but if you suffer from the occasional bad back as I do, you'll find the bed on the 2nd floor better, even though my personal taste is for a firmer bed. The shower is fantastic and there was always plenty of hot water. Cromford is a delightful village with plenty of amenities. I was concerned that I might have problems eating in the village as I am a coeliac and must stick to a gluten free diet.......... how wrong could I be..? Not only was there a fantastic tapas bar, within 2 minutes of the cottage, that did the most amazing steak served on a sizzle pan with all the trimmings and a bottle of wine for only £30 for two...! There was also a fish & chip shop that did gluten free to order, I would thoroughly recommend the haddock & chips but be prepared for a very generous portion. All in all it was a very relaxing week and both the cottage and the village were better than our expectations.
