We stayed at The Butler House in February and it is an incredible 6 acre property with abundant beauty, and is truly a place to peel away the painful stresses of a busy life. The spacious house exudes charm from every nook and cranny, is tastefully decorated with antiques, local pottery and art. It was our impression that Tim Cornes, the owner, has thoughtfully provided every amenity with a guest's comfort in mind.
Transportation can be pre-arranged by Kay Loomis of Butler House. Trust her!! Our transportation was hassle-free, seamless and we highly endorse her recommendations! We flew into St. Kitts and took the water taxi "Black Fin" (Capt. Clivin Christmas) from Reggae Beach, SK to Oualie Beach, Nevis, where our taxi driver "Smiles" transported us to Butler. The water-taxi not only saved time, but it was fun, great to meet Clivin, and the views in every direction make it well worth it! We wanted an SUV for exploring, so Kay arranged with Albert Rentals to bring the SUV to the Butler House upon our arrival. Raymond issued the Nevis Driver's permit and we were all set. Our SUV was clean and reliable all week - no issues. Another great experience.
It was just the two of us in this spacious house, but we only used the master bedroom. We can tell you that the bed was quite comfortable. There are ceiling fans in every room that kept the house cool and the weather and temps were absolutely perfect during our entire stay!!
The location was peaceful and perfect for us as we like to commune with nature, and be off on our own and away from all things commercial. However, it's always nice to have some conveniences nearby when you want them. A few miles down the road is one of the best grocery stores on the island. We were told that by many locals, and we believe it to be true. It's not the biggest, but for the island, it stocks a good variety groceries, wine/beer/liquor and is open on Sundays too! Also, there is so much amazing dining on Nevis and all of it is a short drive from Butler House!
We kept all the doors at Butler House open all day when we were on property not only for the breeze, (Notable: There were NO bugs!! AMAZINGLY!!) but to also enjoy the views. From the doors of the kitchen and master BR and windows of the master bathroom you look onto the patio and gardens with their colorful plantings, views of the water and of the expansive, yet manicured yard with its stone walls and 6 acres to explore. If you time it right in the morning and early evening, you'll see monkeys - they're very shy and insist on keeping their distance.
We LOVED the kitchen - I'll call it "chic rustic", with its many wooden cupboards, wonderfully stocked with small appliances, and cooking utensils of every kind. It also is stocked with enough dinnerware and glasses for a "family reunion!" - which I think is noteworthy! We cooked-in for our breakfasts, and grilled a couple of filet mignon for one of our dinners! *TIP: On any island-meat can be quite pricey.* In anticipation - we packed frozen bacon :) and filet mignon, pancake mix and a jug of Vermont Maple Syrup, all in our checked luggage -with no regrets. For our breakfast pancakes we use local fruit that is in season.
There were two Zen places where we most found our "chill." In the morning on the front porch sofas we'd looked out at the ocean with a cup of tea and a book, and also by the pool on the hill among the gardens with hummingbirds and butterflies and with views of the blue ocean. It was Just amazing and will forever be my happy place!!
We found sweet little beaches with barely a person on them. We bought our snorkels, but weren't highly motivated to go, we had all we needed at Butlers and will snorkel next time. My only negative experience was a nasty encounter with a bunch of Fire Ants! I wasn't even on a hill, but must have been too close to one and stayed still in one place in the yard too long? I lived, but it was a most unpleasant experience. Just be aware. All over the island of course were monkeys, little herds of goats (tails up), Caribbean sheep (tails down) and donkeys that you'll see along the roadside and in pastures, and colorful colonial buildings in Charlestown proper with it's marina and pretty views of St. Kitts in the distance.
For the first night we had a wonderful dinner delivered (still warm) to the Butler House by Catherine! So after a long day of travel, we didn't have to cook or search for a restaurant that was still open, which helped us ease into relaxation. Catherine's homemade coconut cake for desert was yummy! This can be arranged with Kay for a small fee.
The three most memorable restaurants during our stay: "THE ROCKS" at Golden Rock for it's dining experience, the food and lovely pools in a tropical atmosphere (an old sugar mill); the "GIN TRAP" again, awesome dining with breathtaking views across the water to St. Kitts from the bar, rooftop lounge and also from our restaurant window-gorgeous at any time of day. We concur that our favorite restaurant was BANANAS. It is tucked away in a stunningly lush, tropical atmosphere. We made reservations early, arrived 1/2 hr. or so before sunset, took a "sundowner" (fav beverage) up to the rooftop lounge and watched the sunset. You feel the magic of Nevis in ceremony in this tropical atmosphere. Downstairs the tropical magic continued with a candlelit dining experience that was romantic and delicious. Sadly I didn't make it to the gift shop! Oh Well. Sacrifices had to be made! :)
We've traveled all over the Caribbean and stayed in some truly lovely places. We just can't say enough about how beautiful Butler House is in its tranquil location, with it's views, the pool, yet near enough to numerous fine dining choices and so many places yet to explore. This island and the location of Butlers was all we could have ever asked for. I pray this island doesn't over-develop, it is perfect the way it is. We will be back soon as there is still many hidden places for us to explore. One week was way too short! We gave up a few days not wanting to leave Butlers. Oh Well. Sacrifices had to be made! :) Thank you Tim for sharing your absolutely charming home with us. We're so grateful for having had this most incredible experience.
