We celebrated New Year’s Eve 2011 in this small family driven hotel situated close to lake St. Wolfgang. We experience a hearty welcome, got our 28 sqm seasonally decorated room (actually a junior suite) and were happy from the start. The furniture is quite new and modern in style and so are the room textiles and the bathroom. Of course they do not offer a buffet breakfast for just 6 romms, but it is quite comfy to get served what you like individually and get ham and/or eggs differently styled every day, if you wish so. The fruit basket in our room was another pleasant surprise.
The hotel lies opposite to the house, where Mozart’s sister lived for 14 years. Nannerl’s home is now a museum. Wolfgang himself is represented by a statue in the main square of the village amd is admired daily by many Italians, Germans, Japanese, Russian and South Korean people every day, . visiting St. Gilgen by boat or bus. By the way, the daughter of the house is a certified interpreter in Spanish and Russian.
For New Years Eve the landlady suggested an Austrian Cuisine 4 course menu (ham & melon, pancake soup, mixed grill with pommes frites and salad and sorbet) for just 2012 Cents. Even the midnight “champagne” was included. We were a small party and had a wonderful time there. German guests talked about their adventures on the autobahn coming there from Hannover and the landlady herself had some episodes from the time, where German Chancellor Helmut Kohl spent many summers in St. Gilgen, and the administrative staff had occasional lunches at the Rosam restaurant.
We are already looking forward to visiting this place during Salzburg festival season.
