This hotel was a total trip! We arrived in Manteigas, the town we hoped to use as our base for doing some hiking in the lovely, green Serra da Estrela region, and we came across this place through a recommendation from the local tourist office (about a 3-minute walk away). What we found was this 100-year-old mansion that seemed like it was straight from an old movie. The old lady who opened the door for us was equally picturesque and she showed us the variety of truly old rooms we had our choice of, since there was nobody else in the hotel. You could just roam around the rooms of the hotel, which was filled with the real old family pictures of the wealthy clan that owned this once-manorial home. We were able to make free use of the ancient dining room that was filled with silver and candelabras and the like. The bathrooms were decorated in truly old and lovely Portugese tiles. The decor of the rooms seemed to be from another era. Mind you, none of this was newly-produced but made-to-look-old decor: this was all actually old, and you had the sensation of being in a living museum. The views out our top-floor window were of all the beautiful and majestic surrounding mountains. And many of the (very poorly marked) hiking trails were close enough not to even need a car, so we could set off on foot. Great hotel for a time warp!!! I hope it doesn't close down or get renovated into something with no personality, since this was a real gem and a fun experience for us all! …
