We stayed here for three nights with our horses. My review pertains to the bed and bale option. People staying without their own horses might not find my comments relevant.
Pros:
- scenic setting
- spacious paddock with minimal grass (good for my easy keeper)
- spacious common room
- ranch-themed decor gives the place a nice atmosphere
- very clean kitchen equipped with microwave, fridge, convection toaster oven
- very clean bathroom with a nice shower
- duvets and lots of pillows on the beds
- real maple syrup at breakfast
- good coffee
- owner lights a fire in the wood stove each night
- within a 30 minute trailer ride of Mono Cliffs Provincial Park and Dufferin Forest
Cons:
- they don't allow you to ride their trails without a guide, which costs $60 per hour
- stalls are very small and have concrete floors with no rubber mats.
- no bucket hooks in stalls, so water buckets have to be placed on the floor where horses will inevitably kick them over
- very tight quarters in the barn; it really isn't a good set up for horses in my opinion
- no shelter in the paddock
- water trough in the paddock was empty when we arrived and the owner wouldn't fill it until after we parked the trailer and completed the waiver and payment. This made me feel uneasy from the start, as it gave me the impression that my horse's health and safety wasn't a high priority. The water trough was badly in need of a good scrubbing too.
- horse trailers have to be parked about 200 metres from the paddock and accommodations, which was inconvenient as they contained all of our gear
- the owner likes to sit at the table during meals to philosophize about a variety of topics. Some guests might find this charming, but we would have preferred a friendly hello and a bit of small talk and then be left to our own conversation.
- the bedroom and the owner's living space is connected by a window which covered by a feed bag and tacked up strips of wood, so sound travels freely and there are actually holes that you can see right through. This affected our sense of privacy.
- there is no lock on the bedroom door and in fact the owners encourage you to leave the door open so that the heat can get in. Again, this was a privacy issue as well as a security concern because ranch guests use the common space during the day.
Overall I think this place would be a good option for non-horse people to enjoy a horsey vacation in the country. I wouldn't recommend it as a bed and bale.

Thank you for your comments on our “Bed and Bale” offering. We really do appreciate both positive and negative feedback from our guests and endeavour to learn from it. We had numerous emails and a phone call scheduling your three-day stay here trying to anticipate needs and level-set expectations. By your comments it appears some of the communication to the group at large fell short. Being a horses-first person, let’s address your “Bale” concerns first. We have been in the ranching business for over 40 years – our horses (36) and cattle (120 head) are maintained in a herd – outside 7/24/365. Thank-you for identifying the shortcomings in our horse barn, as we do not use it often. Some of the items we can fix, some we never will. Yes, there are no mats; yes, it has a narrow aisle; yes, there were no hooks for water buckets (addressed)… but from our perspective, for a short-term stay-over, they are 10*12, bright, box stalls that we had clean and were ready to be put to use. During the set-up we left the option open to you to have indoor or outdoor or combo-board. You chose not to use the stalls but let your horses enjoy their freedom in our paddock – the right option for any horses as far as we are concerned. You are right, the pasture trough was not filled before your arrival – being that it was air drying after a scrubbing - but certainly an oversight on our part. It was addressed and maintained throughout your visit. After unloading your horses and settling them in the pasture, you were asked to park in a specific area so as to keep your trucks and trailers out of the way of our fire lane. We provided an ATV to deliver your personal belongings to your room from your parking spot. As well we delivered your hay to the horses. We do not see this arrangement as an inconvenience but one of safety first. On that matter, your four horse’s health and safety were never in question at any time during your stay with us. Part of our business is providing private guided ranch adventure rides on our own horses. We also offer these same adventures to people who bring their horses but we need to send out a guide to help them to navigate our private trail system or work with our cattle. We take pride in our trail network that we have established over the past 25 years with its miles of variety and terrain and simply cannot have people riding aimlessly about – no matter how experienced they think they are. During the event set-up, your group was offered the opportunity to ride our trails but the offer was declined. The choice was to take your horses off-ranch each day. In the end, we did accommodate your group with a late-in-the-day, last minute ride on the day you arrived. Had we had advanced booking (as we do in all our rides) this would have been far more successful. The way our rides work and the fee is posted on our website and was discussed in advance so there should be no surprise here. Now to your B and B concerns: Again, some of the items you raise we can fix and some we never will: We built the B&B wrap-around extension to our farmhouse back in 1996 and recently renovated the bathroom and kitchenette. In the winter, the space is heated by the wood stove but we also put it to use for your weekend. The notes posted on the bedroom doors are for our winter guests so that their rooms remain heated overnight. You are correct – from your bedroom there are two windows that connect to our farmhouse. In the hallway of your room the window is covered by a feed bag and pine-post strips of wood - we call that décor ‘ranching charm’. On ‘our side’ is the hallway stairs to our second floor. The other window in your room is covered by the same ‘ranching charm’ on the lower 7/8ths – the top 1/8th is beautiful blue opaque antique glass. On ‘our side’ the lower 7/8ths we call our ‘hall of fame’ – completely filled with family pictures. We were not aware that you could see through into our space in some spots and plan on addressing this as soon as possible. Especially in the fair-weather riding season, we inform all guests that the Saloon area (great room) is space shared by all our guests. Generally our private day riding bookings do not arrive until 10:00am so the shared use is from 9:00am as we set-up until late afternoon. We did discuss this with your group lead who seemed to suggest that you would be out on the trail by 10am and this should not impact your stay. You certainly had the run of the space during the evening. For any stay on our ranch, one of us, if not all of us are on site at all times. But we do apologize if at anytime you felt your security or privacy was at risk and wished you had brought this to our attention at the time. In fact there is a lock on the main door to the B&B should you have felt the need for more security – it just never crossed my mind that we would need to lock-up. We are just so used to the serenity of our space, and our dogs who bring everything to our attention! We believe we have a really unique offering here for non-horse and horse people alike. Specific to the 'Bale', we believe it’s important to learn from and celebrate differences in animal husbandry approaches and appreciate and respect how others do things. In the end we really put an effort into trying to please your group - but from your rating, we can't please everyone - just learn from the experience.

We stayed here during our hike of the Bruce Trail. What an amazing two days stop over. Our hosts could not have been more accommodating, even though it is a B&B they provided a pack lunch and evening meal as we could not carry it in with us. They provided a shuttle service to and from the trail as part of the service.
Our hosts treated us as part of the family and shared their amazing lifestyle of a working Cattle and Horse Ranch with us.
Just a simple thank you, our stay was amazing.

Stayed here for two nights while walking the Bruce Trail. Carl and Natalie are fantabulous!! Wonderful hosts and there is a beautiful home feeling being there. Loved sharing life stories with them over food and wine. No pretentiousness, simply a home to share. Add it to your accommodation list for hiking!
