I agree with the other reviewer : when you book this place, there's a good chance that you don't want to leave anymore. My husband and I stayed here for only 5 days in March 2013, and we're already thinking of returning next year.
We arrived by plane in Kittila airport (Finland) and were transferred by landrover to the guesthouse which lies 170 km/ 1 hour and 40 minutes from the airport, just over the Swedish border. Other guests arrived in Kiruna Airport (Sweden), but the distance to the guesthouse and transfer time are about the same.
The guesthouse lies in Kangos, which is a small village of +/- 270 inhabitants, surrounded by beautiful scenery (frozen rivers, lakes, forests)
The guesthouse was formerly a home for elderly citizens, but the rooms are re-styled and are very cosy.
There are only 6 rooms, with comfortable beds, a big bathroom and a kitchenette with a hot plate, a waterboiler, a sink, and a mini-fridge. There is a diningtable in the room too.
Polar nights guesthouse is run by Nigel (originally from the U.K.) and his congenial Ukranian wife Lena. Lena and Maria do the cooking which is varied, delicious and portions are enough to feed an army.
Breakfast is a communal affair, with a large selection of cereals, bread, hard boiled eggs, cheese, meats, marmalade, fruit, yoghurt, tea, coffee and hot chocolate.
At 6 pm; dinner is served, followed by a homemade dessert.
For those who book full board : a complete hot meal is served at noon too.
We had booked half-board, and at lunch-time we ate some snacks which we bought in the village store at the end of the street. (a 5 minutes walk)
On your first day you're fitted out with the proper clothes for the outdoor activities.
You get a pair of pants, special boots, a coat, a hat and gloves. You can keep these clothes for the duration of your stay..
Your guides for the outdoor activites are Nigel, Jonatan (snowmobiling), and Doris (skiing and langlaufing). Although it is possible to book extra activities at the guesthouse, it is better to do so in advance, because Nigel has to make a schedule for all the guests and see who's available to accompany you.
Nigel owns a few snowmobiles, but for the husky-safari he works together with a huskyfarm 7 km from the guesthouse. Other possible activities are ice-fishing, a visit to the ice-hotel and to a moose-farm 70 km away (very interesting !), and a visit to a reindeer herdsman.
The reindeer farm can be reached on foot too, however. It is a +/- 1 km walk.
At the cross-roads near the village store, you turn left across the bridge over the river Lainio, and then take the first road to the right. Continue straight on until you see some strawbales and you'll see the reindeer in a fenced field on your left.
Snowmobiling proved to be our favourite activity
There is a small sauna and a jacuzzi outside at the guest-house too.
It was a special sensation to sit in a hot tub in outside temperatures of - 15°C, and to cool yourself in the snow after a sauna.
After dinner the guests have the guesthouse to themselves. You can relax in the communal lounge, or go out and try to see the Northern lights on the lake close by when the skies are clear.
We really liked the homely atmosfere of the guesthouse and the way that everybody made you feel more like friends in stead of guests. We warmly recommend it !

An almost 2 hour flight from Stockholm, then 1 hour 40 private transfer in a landrover and you arrive in Kangos, the home of the Polar Nights guest house. Run by Nigel and wife Lena, the guest house is a comfortable home. Guests share the lounge filled with cosy couches and chairs, or can stay in their rooms when not out on a snowmobile, cross country skiing, snow shoeing or just walking around enjoying the stunning scenery. Accommodation is practical - particularly when you're walking in and out with snow covered boots all day - the rooms are well heated and very cosy, and the bed is very comfortable. Lena and Maria cook all your meals - home made soup for lunch with bread and crackers followed by home made cake and slice; dinner included local Swedish favourites of reindeer with mashed potato & lingonberry sauce, and meatballs with rice and salad. It was great to come in and smell the soup or the dinner cooking when you came back from your activities. Nothing was too much trouble, and everything was very well organised for our tours. Our guide, Jonathan, even managed to find the Northern Lights for us which was awesome - as well as taking us over part frozen lakes, through forests and through 2m of powder on our snowmobiles. All in a days work...If it wasn't a 30+ hour flight to get here we'd be back every year...
