The good: Incredible setting on its own with nothing but vineyards and views of the Andes. Beautiful house, friendly and helpful staff, comfortable beds, nice linens, towels, etc. great value for the money. The not so good: First it was very difficult to find. We are not map or GPS challenged and we consider ourselves very good at finding our way all over the world. The manager sent us a map but failed to mention that the "road" that we needed to turn on and drive on for 4 km has no name, no sign, and is just a dirt and gravel track. We had a GPS but it's useless because it's not on a real road. You basically have to ask for specific landmarks and distances from them in order to find this place. If I did it again I would rent an SUV because the little Fiat that we rented wasn't great at off roading and we were worried we would puncture something under the car and get stranded. Once we got there we were very pleased and happy with the house. You should know that this is not a hotel. It's a house that was built really to accommodate the owners of the property and their friends. We loved that we had the house completely to ourselves for most of the time, and for the price we paid we felt like we got very lucky. You could spend 3 times the price at Cavas Wine Lodge and get wonderful service, but not nearly the amount of space and privacy. The staff was wonderful, we found them almost too present since we were the only ones there. One woman came in every day in the morning, made us breakfast, and cleaned and stayed until 4:00pm. Then another woman came until the evening. She even made us dinner once and they didn't charge us anything more. The house was also stocked with food and drinks, and it was all included. We didn't feel like they tried to get more money from us, it was very nice and refreshing. Since there was only two of us it felt a bit uncomfortable to have a woman standing in the open kitchen and either watching the (only) TV or reading a magazine. We would have preferred to be left on our own. We did tell the manager that and the woman sort of tried to fade into an unused room, but we really didn't need the 4:00 and later help. It would be much better if the house didn't have an open kitchen floor plan. If the staff had a place to go so they weren't in the same space as us it would have been nice for them to be there. A couple of things need to be addressed to make this place terrific. The biggest problem is that the water heater is located very far from the house in an open shed. So, the hot water literally takes 15 minutes to get to the house, and the pilot kept blowing out since it gets windy at night. So we had a number of cold showers. The staff doesn't think to either move the heater closer, install a closed door to protect it from the wind, or even check the pilot first thing in the morning so we didn't have to wait an hour while it heated up. On our last night I asked the staff if the security guard could check the water heater early in the morning so we could shower and leave at 7:00 to get to our 9:15 flight. They promised they would do it, but we had no hot water on our last very cold morning. I think another issue is that this is really a house for the owners of the property, so while we were there alone it was awesome, but there was a day when they decided to have 16 people there for lunch with about 6 kids, and they really took over the place. It was apparent that it was their place and that we needed to stay in our room out of their way, luckily they did not stay overnight as they planned so it was only inconvenient for a few hours. If this were the case for the entire time of our stay we would have hated it, but we were lucky. When we had to stay in our room it would have been nice to have a TV or at least some chairs or seating on the patio, but there isn't any. The seating inside the house was very comfortable, but they need more outdoor seating, especially upstairs on the master patio. The heat in our room didn't work but it wasn't too bad since the downstairs heat worked. The pool and lagoons around the house are beautiful, but the pool is not heated and it didn’t seem to be filtered or maintained while we were there. In fact the water level kept going down so that by the time we left the top steps were out of the water. The lights in the pool were inoperative. At night it can be a bit scary because you're on your own in a big house in the middle of nowhere. We liked that but we did wake up a couple of times to the sound of the wind wondering if someone was downstairs. Since there wasn’t really anything much written about this place I thought I’d try to give a more detailed review. Would we stay here again? Yes, as long as we could be sure not to have any of the owners and their friends at the house with us. This place would be great for a large group or family where you took the entire house.

My wife and I live in New York, so when we go on vacation we sometimes like to stay at a place a little outside of town to get a change of pace. In this respect, Santa Maria de los Andes was perfect for us. The staff is minimal, two ladies are present during the day to mind the house and make up the rooms, but very helpful. If you don't want to go out for dinner they will be happy to prepare a simple but delicious meal for you. The staff departs at about 10 pm so after they leave you have the house to yourself and are free to make yourself at home however you choose, perhaps by watching TV or sitting by a fire in the fireplace. If you do want to go out for dinner the guest house's manager can make reservations for you at excellent restaurants in downtown Mendoza (45 minutes away) or more local restaurants associated with some of the other nearby vineyards (10 minutes away). Given that the guest house is located a ways outside Mendoza it is important that you let the staff know how you will be arriving in town so that a driver with knowledge of how to get to Santa Maria de los Andes can pick you up from the airport or bus station. If you do not have your own transportation you will need to arrange for a driver and a car to take you on the activities you have planned. The manager can also help you with this. It's also important that you know that you may not be the only guests in the guest house. We reserved the master suite for our stay, but there were two other rooms in the house that could have been occupied by other guests. They happened to be empty during our stay, but if they weren't then we would have had to share the common areas of the guest house, e.g. living room, pool, kitchen, with them during our stay. Our experience was entirely positive. We would definitely come back to Santa Maria de los Andes.
