I feel incredibly lucky to have had the opportunity to stay in the Morgenstern apartment on this beautiful, authentic Bavarian farm.
The pictures of the apartment don't do it justice. It is kitted out (including the kitchen) with everything you could need for a comfortable stay, and is much more spacious than the pictures attest to. Some highlights:
Apartment
* For the history buffs out there: if you bring binoculars, on a clear day you can see the Eagle's Nest from the balcony. This will be a big draw for some people!
* Beds very comfy. No drawers but plentiful wardrobe with deep cupboard pockets either side, and a safe. Wifi has worked well when we've needed it (mobile reception is fine, no blackspots around the farm).
* The apartment feels incredibly spacious to a couple of two. The pictures again don't do justice to the generous dimensions. I think it's probably down to the wide hallways, wide doors and doorways, everything just feels very spacious and comfortable. We had blinding 30 degree weather during our June stay, but we wouldn't have felt cooped up if we'd been 'stuck' inside by bad weather. The apartment feels both cosy and spacious at the same time.
* It might not be obvious from the listing but there is a wrap around balcony, so you can sit on two sides, to your preference.
* The view is indescribable. I challenge anyone to sit here on the balcony with a freshly brewed coffee in the early morning, listening to the birds and happy animals, watching the mists disappear, not to feel contented and inspired.
* I don't use the word immaculate lightly: you can see that the place has been 'freshly' built, fitted and decorated. I have stayed in 5* hotels that were not this clean and beautifully finished. Seriously, there was not a stray piece of fluff, no missed spots on the crockery, not a single smear on a mirror or the glass, nothing.
* As someone who has personally fully renovated my own home, I recognise that the finish in this place is next level. Sounds stupid but I could not find a single blemish in the grouting, the silicone seals, the wood work, the painting, the flooring, any of the fittings...
* I'd just like to give particular credit to the carpenter - amazingly, I think I overheard it mentioned that this is Regina's husband!! Again, being a bit of a DIY nerd here but the quality of the joinery is stunning. I believe not only things like the furniture but also the wall / ceilings, doors, door frames, kitchen cupboards, balcony etc were all done 'in house'... Just incredible. I'm so enviable of that level of skill! And alongside running a working diary farm... just, wow.
Kitchen
* Proper Jura bean to cup coffee machine. And an automatic milk frother so that you can make yourself a genuine latte! Regina even provides a packet of coffee beans!!
* Provided the kitchen consumables that places often forget - kitchen roll, baking paper, washing up liquid, sponge and cloth, etc. Having stayed in self-catering places that don't provide these, it's much appreciated to have these starter supplies!
* Regina generously provides fresh eggs and milk in the morning from the farm - divine! - being from UK produce so fresh and creamy is a genuine treat! - and also can arrange to include bakery items (i.e. bread, coissants) with the morning delivery for cost. Really cannot overstate how lovely this is.
* Massive fridge, and a freezer box (this fits more than you'd think: a couple of boxes of ice-creams and a few bags of veggies / hash browns etc - only thing it won't quite fit is a pizza box.)
* Absolutely loads of crockery and cutlery, kettle, toaster, mixing bowls, jug, loads of pots, a frying pans, chopping boards, trivets, grill tray, toaster, kettle, egg boiler, cheese grater. Perfectly stocked.
General
* The welcome from Regina and her family was really warm. Regina speaks fantastic English. It was a pleasure to chat with her when we caught her on a brief break from farm working.
* Take a moment to look at the wall prints - these are genuine pictures of the family working the farm in the past, wonderful!
* The cows are adorable, we were lucky enough to see some adolescents running around as well as happy dust-bathing and chickens. You can hear the farm work going on during the day, but it's not disturbing (I loved hearing the cow bells tinkle away).
* Location: 10 minute drive from Berchtesgaden (lots of supermarkets and shops; just make sure you take a Euro to Lidl for the trolley as they don't offer baskets urrgh!!) and Konigssee (quaint town and definitely worth doing the boat tour.) Location is perfect for visiting The Eagle's Nest or even hopping over to Austria / Salzburg (fwee train woo).
Just some notes (not criticisms in any way, just so that people can plan):
* No microwave (the oven is powerful, and spotless, fan assisted with grill etc).
* I'd advise trying to arrive in the daylight: the roads to the farm are single track and have some sharp bends; we were glad for our nerves regarding looking after the rental car to be able to see all the signs etc.
Travel tips:
* Make sure you look up the Gastekarte (Berchtesgaden Guest Card) before arrival to see what you can get a discount on - bus and much train travel is totally free!, and you get discounted or free parking in some places by scanning our card. Needless to say, our cards were waiting on the kitchen table at our arrival.
* Accommodation listing names online can be confusing: Tripadvisor "Gastehaus Schoberlehen" , Google "Ferienwohnungen Schoberlehen" (can confirm Google Maps does get you to the correct location)
---
As you can probably tell, I can't rate the apartment, the farm, the lovely hosts and the location highly enough. Would strongly recommend anyone to visit if you get the chance to book in, I expect this place will be in very high demand whilst it is this well run and beautifully kept.
Thanks so much to Regina and family for an unforgettable stay :-)
