If I ask the hotel to arrange taxis, to and from airport, do I need to reserve some cash or can I pay on my card?
Depends. We use MyTaxi App in Rome so it may be prudent to check if it works in Pompei/Naples. It is like Uber and linked to your debit/credit card.
Cash seems to work better in all bookings I have found. If you
use a 4 or 5 star hotel, their people are very trustworthy. If you are off the beaten path, you must be careful that you don't get overcharged. common sense works best.
Hi there RebHayter - Give the hotel a ring. The front desk people are very friendly and speak English (at least American English ;) ). I am sure they will give you a price and tell you how to pay. Then make your own comparisons/judgement.
The hotel is in a great location. As suggested by AnnieSantaFe, if you are doing your own thing, enter via the "exit" which is the closest way to enter the site from the hotel (almost right across the street). Everyone else comes in the "proper way" meaning that is where the crowds start. Allow at least 4 hours on the grounds if you like to meander ancient ruins. You can do it in less time, but you will miss some of the off the path sites.
If you are going to visit the ruins with a private guide, the hotel will help. However we were not overly impressed with the one we had. Sadly, we don't recall his name (probably selective memory). He was just in a hurry to get us through his planned tour and seemed very impressed with himself. Treated our questions like they were an annoyance. So seek out some guidance from others before booking.
Most hotels accept both.
I tend to book my transfers online. They're excellent and avoid all the routes that have heavy traffic.
If you need details of the transfer I use let me know.
Hope this helps
You will pay the driver in cash. I think my driver was Alfonso? He was great, took me to Herculaneum and hooked me up with a van trip to Mt. Vesuvius. The Forum is right at the rear exit of the ruins so you can go in the morning an have some blessed solitude for a couple of hours before the people coming in the main entrance have time to make it up that way. There is a Bancomat (ATM) a block or so away too. I am actually going back next September from my trip last September and will stay at the Forum then too. There is so much to see in the ruins you can hardly see it all, plus the Villa dei Mysteri, Archeological Museum in Naples etc. Pretty long walk to the front entrance but they'll arrange a taxi if you want. About 1/2 mile to left of entrance is a big food market as well which is what I did to save money for all the taxis lol. The town of Pompei is to the right and there's a beautiful cathedral and bell tower these, shops etc. I got an economy room which was fine but it looks like they have some very nice rooms and suites. Bathroom was modernized. Breakfast was good, nice gardens for sitting and eating outside. Very nice for the area. This year I might try the train to Naples where I will stay 2 nights. Definitely recommend the Hotel Forum.
You can make a deal with the driver to take you to Herculanum too. Don't miss that! And go into the Pompeii ruins at the "exit" across the street from the hotel if you can.
Thank you so much Annie that into is a great help. Can I ask the trip up mount Vesuvius my husband would like to walk to the top with the teenage granddaughters were as I unfortunately walk with a crutch. I s there somewhere for me to wait for them if I can not manage the climb and will I get to see some views of an I best left at the hotel.lol.
