Truly an enjoyable and worthwhile place. They do amazing work here to protect and care for the native creatures. Extremely knowledgeable staff. Great way to learn about the challenges facing the Costa Rican wildlife and see the excellent care Sibu provides. Highly recommend.

Sibu is an awesome place to check out if you’re staying in Nosara. My partner and his two teenage daughters (18 & 16) and I visited one morning during our trip and were greeted with super friendly staff who really were passionate about the work they do and contributions to the natural environment present in Costa Rica. We had the opportunity to learn not only about animals (monkeys especially!) but plant life. Meeting the residents was an unforgettable experience and we loved every minute of it. Sibu should be supported by absolutely everyone who visits the region!

What an extraordinary place to visit and to learn what the director and her staff/volunteers are doing to help care for and release the wonderful animals of Costa Rica. The tour had three different parts, ending with us being divided into very small groups to visit the animals housed at Sibu. Aspects of the tour ranged from tasting fruits from the trees growing on the grounds to standing several feet from a howler monkey who cannot be released and listening to him howl. We were happy to pay the admission fee since it is contributions that fund this most needed sanctuary.

One of the highlights of our summer in Costa Rica was visiting Sibu. Highly recommend for those looking to better understand wildlife and plant life. We did a bunch of research and decided this was the right nature experience for us; we were not disappointed. We drove 2 hours from Playa Grande/Tamarindo and the roads were *very* bumpy so plan for extra travel time.
It was tough to find; we thought Google Maps had dropped us in the middle of nowhere because we didn't see the welcome sign or gate from our angle of entrance off the road, but volunteer Amy was at the gate and waved us in (phew!).
There were 7 people in our group (4 adults + 3 kids 6-11yo; note that another family mentioned that there's a min age requirement of 5yo in case you have littles). We were joined by a couple and another family of 4. Sibu tries to keep group sizes small, and only offer a couple tours a day and only a couple days a week, so snagging a spot is special.
A combo of Fabian and Amy (both extraordinary) delivered the +/-45min walking tour through the jungle; we saw monkeys, learned about a lot of plants, termites, the matapalo tree, families of coaties, and were offered coconut waters, juice, water.
Then Vicki, the founder/owner, delivers a quick +/-30min presentation in (what feels like) a treehouse balcony since it's a landing built around trees on the edge of a landing. We hear the founder's story, nonprofit origin story, risks and opportunities to monkey preservation, and so much more.
Then Fabian helped us visit the couple of monkeys (+/- 30mins) that they care for who are unable to return to the wild for a number of reasons. Hearing the stories of each monkey was my favorite part; equal parts heart-wrenching and promising.
Then we were gifted a calendar/family and invited to buy t-shirts; I'm bummed that I didn't act fast enough to snag one before we were whisked into the owner's truck to hitch a ride down the mountain back to the entrance gate.
We truly loved this visit and urge you to make it happen too. Couple notes from us: wear pants and/or bug spray (inc. on your face; my son got bitten on his face - the only place where we didn't apply!). There's a lot of tree coverage, but you should still wear sunscreen, closed toed shoes, hats, stay hydrated, pee before you get there (bathroom stop about an hour into the tour).

It was so nice to visit Sibu and experience Vicki’s passion to save the animals. Something we should all become sensitive to, given we are living in their habitat. So informative, and a highlight of our trip.

A shelter for monkeys that cannot be released to the wild. They may have lost limbs due to contact with power lines, or have been previously owned by abusive humans. The goal is to re-release them, but some are there for life. And they make them lives worth living. Very large habitats with much to do. Companionship if they are sufficiently (monkey) socialized. Vicki Coan is the founder and she gives a personal talk at the conclusion of the tour. They don't hit you for donations, but they do ask for $60USD/pp for the tour. For a good cause.

A fantastic story about a lady who moved to Costa Rica, fell in love with animals in need and actually did something about it. The sanctuary Vicky built and her story is worth seeing. We also met volunteers Becca and Henry that bring the place to life. Learning how these animals become in need is kind of depressing but seeing someone do something about it gives us hope. It’s worth a few hours to visit with them.

This was a RICH experience. I'm so happy to see that there are people out there in the world like these people. Such passion and vision for nature and it is invigorating to hear their story. I brought my son and we both really felt this was the highlight of our trip. I truly support them. I hope that I can learn from them and so something amazing of the sort to help others. :)

What days can we visit? I saw that visiting/tour is allowed twice a week. Is there a van service to use for transportation?

You can take a tuk tuk from your lodge to get there. The drivers are local and know their way around. Very inexpensive. They are parked at most intersections or your hotel can call one. You need to email Sibu to make a reservation. Vicky or her staff answere within 24 hours.

We'd like to come visit, what are your hours? Do you accept day volunteers, or does it need to be a longer engagement.

It is a wonderful place to visit (and the daily fee is well justified) but I cannot imagine that they would take a day volunteer. The visitor fees help support their great work and I expect it would take much more than a day to train a volunteer.

I will be staying at the Riu Palace resort in Guanacaste ..
If I make arrangements to visit the sanctuary, will I be able to hire a driver to get me there? .....How long is the drive?
Is there a tour company that arranges a trip to the Sanctuary from my hotel?

Based on a google search you are a good couple of hours drive away from Nosara which is your closest community.
I would suggest contacting your hotel to discuss logistics. Roads and driving conditions are not good in many areas of CR so you will need to know what you are getting into when you book your tour. Still all in all the drive and the visit to SIBU would be worth it for me. I'd even suggest considering getting good directions and renting a car yourself. ( for the more adventurous types).

We are planning a trip to Play Hermosa next febuary and i was wondering what the cost of this visit was and how far from playa Hermosa by car. Also was wondering how long the visit lasts?.

I'm not sure how much it costs since it was part of our whole resort package. Sorry. I think the whole visit was perhaps 3 hours. I got the feeling it was somewhat flexible though. You have to prearrange your visit and show up on time to the front gate, which is kept locked. Then when everyone is gathered Steve took us for a short hike and told us about the plants and the background of how they got started in this venture and how they acquired the land. Then we all loaded into a truck and went up the small mountain to the top where the house and the enclosed animal habitats: hospital/ rehabilitation/ nursery are located. We met Miss Vicki there and had lemonade and bananas (complimentary) then watched a short video and heard more about the challenges they face. Then we got to visit the monkeys and pizotes in the habitat. They are very careful not to treat the animals as pets since the goal is to release them into the wild. At the end some of us made donations or bought the book, Tshirt, or calendar that they have available to raise funds but they don't push this. I hope that helps.
