Having lived in Skamokawa on and off throughout my life, I’ve kayaked these waters for years. My friends run Columbia River Kayaking. I was thrilled to join them one on a tour one day in early spring. The weather (March 2023) was half hail, wind, rain and sunshine. Enjoyed it all. Kyleen was our guide and so knowledgeable about the area and wildlife. She gives you the basics on safety and how to handle the kayak for beginners. Because of the weather, they provided all the gear to keep you warm and dry but always expect to get wet! This area of Southwest Washington is gorgeous. The waterways are always full of birds and you may see a seal or two when the season calls for it.
Friendly, knowledgeable guides, gorgeous views, wonderful paddling. Great solo or with a group. They have scheduled guided tours I would recommend all year.

Just came back from the six day/five night Lower Columbia Exploration, and I am longing to return to the quiet mornings, time on the water and expert guiding of the Columbia River Kayaking team in Skamokawa. When you go out on the water with Andrew, Kyleen, Levi, or Connor, you feel safe and protected...so much so that even as a "mature" woman I dared and did new things. They are deeply rooted in the history of the area--natural and human-- and weave it into your experience through wildlife identification, fossil and artifact hunting, geological exploration, formal illustrated presentations and evening concerts by their Skamokawa Swamp Opera. It is an immersive experience---an invitation to slow down and pay attention.

I fell in love with kayaking because of these folks. I'll be back, again and again.

We went on a kayak tour with this company a few years ago and we had a wonderful out and back trip that was about 10 miles or so to the Elochoman River through the wildlife refuge.

The tour this time to Gray’s Bay was shorter, more expensive, with less time on the water and it was far less interesting.

Suggestion: Check out the trips carefully before choosing. Ask questions about how much actual time is spent on the water, vs driving to the starting point, in instruction, etc. For example, leaving from their dock means much more time on the water vs driving to a starting point.
Also, ask about how many other people are going. Groups of 8 or more can mean slow going when skill levels required for the trip are at the I or II level.

We took a weekend tour which last 4 plus hours after our thorough instruction and orientation. Safety as a goal was obvious from the start. Levi helped with understanding the basic of the skirt, entry from a dock or a beach, best strokes, and most likely ways to capsize. Our group of two plus four took off from the store up the quiet still water of the river (no wind, few waves early). All had previous kayaking experience of varying degree. We traveled along the wildlife refugee while Levi told us about it, history and even geology. We saw a young eagle, osprey, a kingfisher, and vultures. The portion of the trip through the narrow channel in the refuge was the best part for me. Lunch break on a sandy beach (bring our own this trip). By then the wind had picked up and the waves were more challenging. Our total trip was 15,005 meters (9 miles) by the Garmin gps. Could not have asked for nicer experience or better guide! Recommended!

I went on a tour with Andrew, Kyleen, Levi and Asia with my son's 5th grade class. These people are friendly, courteous, incredibly knowledgeable. they built curriculum around our study of the Lewis and Clark expedition. I felt safe, despite only kayaking a couple of times and never on my own. I cannot recommend this trip enough. the drive to get here from Fort Stevens in Astoria was beautiful and well worth the effort!

We took the 3 hour guided tour around Price Island and into the Wildlife Refuge's newly created slough area. The guide helped us every step of the way, from discussing safety to ensuring the equipment fit right. It was a leisurely trip, skirting the shoreline of the Columbia along Price Is. We saw an abundance and variety of of shorebirds, riparian, and upland birds. It was also fun to see the massive cargo ships float by (at a good distance). The guide was exceptionally well informed about the area's history, the natural environment, and the best places to stay and eat. Would definitely go again, but would do the all day tour next time.

In my 60's and not having kayaked for a while, I wasn't sure what to expect when committing to a 3 day kayaking experience. The outcome was way, way more than I ever would have imagined. For three days, Andrew and Kyleen, and Andrew's son, Connor, led us, stretched us, taught us, and turned us all into advocates for the Columbia River's sustainability, lovers of the Lewis and Clark story, inspired birders, and natural historians. I thought I was going to get some wonderful exercise and get to embrace the outdoors with a little learning thrown in for good measure. What you will get if you kayak with this company is all three professionally executed with a lot of heart thrown in. Just do it!

I've always wanted to kayak and at the same time wanted to introduce my mother to kayaking as well. After finding their website from out of state, I booked their Wildlife Refuge Tour (9 am - 3 pm) and am very glad I did. Asia was wonderful in answering my questions, and reassured me about any potential concerns I had, which turned out not to be a concern after all.

Kyleen was our tour guide and instructor, and in short, I was completely blown away by her knowledge and obvious experience, both in terms of kayaking instruction and emergency training. Just as importantly, she explained things very, very well and took obvious care in keeping close watch on us beginners, including an elderly family member who was rather concerned about being able to keep up, given that this was her very first time and the fact that this was a full day tour.

Sure enough she did just fine, but we were both super impressed (but not surprised) at the level of care and attention that Kyleen showed. And being avid fans of bird watching, to see an Osprey take a fish out of the water, as we did, can't be beat!

If you're ever thinking of trying kayaking, this is a perfect opportunity, as I'll certainly go again!
