Lovely example of 18th century church with a wonderful array of stained glass windows. The church is open to visitors Mon-Wed (0900 to 1500)

So good to find a church that is open during the week. Well kept and an inviting interior. A selection of items for sale and that includes details of the church and local community activities. I lit a candle and had cash so the swipe card facility wasn't needed. Good to have welsh used in this very welsh town. Interrsting old sundial at the entrance and unique wood pillars.

Pretty church in a great setting. Couldn't get in. closed due to Covid? Worth a stroll round the outside though

Unable to enter the church but from looking at the stain glass windows from outside just imagined how beautiful they would be. Grounds nice and church set back from a little side street

Hubby and me visited here on a recent Wednesday morning. It is situated right in the middle of the "old town". It is a Grade 2 listed building. The current church is early Georgian (1716) which is a rarity in Wales. It was constructed around an old church - which was demolished when the new church was completed. The history of the site actually dates back to medieval times (1254).
We were pleased to find the church open to the general public. By the entrance (at the back of the church) we saw an ornate baptismal font. The sun was shining through several colourful stained-glass windows. It was a shame that some of the panes were broken. There were numerous wall monuments. I liked the traditional wooden pews and the half-domed ceiling over the altar.
We were particularly interested in the mid 14th century stone effigy of "Meurig" who was lying down holding his sword. He was from a wealthy family who lived at the Nannau Estate a few miles away. Apparently he was re-sited from the old medieval church to his current location on a window ledge! I thought it was quite quirky that a piece of the wall seems to have been removed to make room for his feet!
We put a donation in the box and then had a walk around the churchyard where there was a variety of ancient headstones, box tombs and monuments. Opposite the front door to the church we saw a Grade 2 listed stone sun dial inscribed with a date of 1835. It was especially nice to hear the sound of the church bells chiming.

I really enjoyed the 08:00 communion service last Sunday. It was expertly led using excellent bi-lingual service books and was a quietly moving, peaceful way to start Sunday. I have really enjoyed hearing the bells chime on the quarter hour during my stay in Dolgellau.

St Mary’s was built in 1716 using local stone and slate.
It is believed that there was a medieval Church on this site as early as 1254.
The Church is situated in the centre of Dolgellau town, has a fascinating history and holds lovely bi-lingual services, regularly attended by a loyal and friendly congregation.
The windows are fantastic, especially when seen from the outside after dark with the Church lights on.
There was a great and moving Armistice Service held here last November to pay tribute to those from the locality who lost their lives during the wars.
The service was brilliantly researched and arranged by two local ladies and included a slide show of the names of those lost whilst a local choir sang.
We were also very moved to see the service attended by members of all the other religious faiths in Dolgellau.
Definitely worth a visit.

If you've never been to a bi-lingual service before I would highly recommend a visit.
The bells chime every 15 minute and it's well worth reading about the history of the Church when you arrive. Right next to Y Sospan and The Royal Ship, a further 90 seconds walk will bring you The Torrent Walk if you want to mingle with the locals and try and Purple Moose beer..
