My wife and I were shocked when we got on this one lane dirt road up the mountain to the trail. There were deep ruts up the tire paths. In many spots we were afraid our suv would bottom out. Only a couple of spots on the long road had room for two vehicles to pass and there was no place to turn around! You would have to back up a long way if meeting an oncoming car. They should not allow this to be used in its current condition!! A white knuckle scary trip. See redwoods elsewhere.

Our GPS brought us passed the turn-off and pointed us up a private drive way. Assuming that we should continue up the highway, we soon saw a Federal lands sign, which seemed legit. About 30 min later, we took a hike at Winchuck campground then retuned. We saw the actual turn off much closer to town.

It may have been a journey but it was a beautiful hike - Choice of short or longer trail through the forest.

Ok let me be real here. I'm moving down but currently at 300 lbs, and sedentary: sit at my office desk for 8-12 hours a day, then sit on the couch until bedtime many days of the week. I was a little nervous to plan a 'walk' no matter how short. Reviews I read were helpful to know there's a short path, but nothing said how long it was and to be honest if I knew it was over a mile I may have skipped it. I'm glad I didn't know, and I have no regrets (ankles still a little sore 2 days later but it's fine). If you're like me and shy away from walking a distance longer than quarter mile, don't let this stop you, it's worth it!

Serenity is the best word I can think of to describe this. Just beautiful, so quiet and a nice little escape from the crazy world. It was approximately 50 degrees, I did not bring a sweater but I wasn't cold. I think a sweatshirt or light jacket would be suitable in general. It wasn't raining at the time, but there were rain drops, I guess stored in the trees from the previous rainfall. It wasn't windy at all, but occasional light breeze that was just delightful.

There are many scattered rocks, twigs and branches in the pathway so just be mindful of the ground as you walk. I had rugged sandals on and the only problem was the occasional twig or pebble that flew into my shoe.

There were a few downed trees across the path, most were narrow and low and easy to step over, however, there was a big one that wasn't on the ground because the sides of that particular spot in the path were a few feet up, so the wide trunk was about chest/neck height for me (5'3") - At that time I didn't realize the loop part was beyond that trunk and we'd have to cross it again. My fiance told me that's what it looked like ahead but I brushed it off, thinking the path continued around and came back closer to the trailhead, but he was right. He climbed up the side of the path and went over the trunk but coming back down the ground was wet and very slippery. I couldn't even climb up the side as it was a bit too steep for me and I'm clumsy and off balance so I had no choice but to turn back or go under. It took a few minutes and some clever maneuvering but I made it under, I had to put my hands on the ground where there's some stick like plants. The main problem was in that position, it was difficult to lift and move my legs to the side, without my backside lifting up and hitting the trunk, which had some moss on it and maybe spiders lol. I have joint pain in my knees from a cancer medication, so squatting while my body was folded in half wasn't an option. We went around the loop and returned to the doomed trunk. My fiance decided to go under this time, he didn't have too much of a problem, despite being over 6'2" - I had a slightly more difficult time this go around but made it, and proud of it!!

The drive up was bumpy and muddy, thankfully the downed trees had been cleared. There's many potholes but they seem to be clumped together in certain spots, so it's not constant. The road is very narrow, and 4 miles long, very appreciative that we did not run into any cars going the opposite way. There are some areas with small turn out or grass to pull up on if needed but other areas you just don't have any room for two cars to pass each other. There's some windy turns too, so go very slow as you have no idea if a car is coming around the corner. No cell/wifi/network service, thankfully my finance had an offline playlist so we had tunes.

Overall, worth a stop if you're in the area!

Just driving the redwood trail gave you a good idea of how massive these trees are. The roads were good and were fairly quiet when we were there.

This trail is a little out of the way so it isn’t filled with people. The trailhead has ample parking and a toilet facility. The trail loop itself is short and mostly level. If you take the side trails off to the left (going downhill) you’ll add a couple of mikes and some elevation change.

This is a beautiful forest trail through the ferns, variety of trees and of course some redwoods. We all enjoyed the hike and getting away from crowds here.

If you use Apple Maps to get to the trailhead, it says you’ve arrived when you turn off Winchuck River Rd, but you really still have 4 more miles on the dirt road before it ends at the trailhead.

The amazing Redwoods in this area are better than any in CA. We never knew about this and just happened upon it and what a gold mine. Stop and walk the trail, it's not hard at all and so worth it. take your camera and be prepared for beauty and quietness.

We truly enjoyed this hike. There are actually two hikes here a short, what seemed to be easy hike and then a longer, more difficult hike. We actually did the longer hike. I would not advise the longer hike if you have a difficult time getting around. It's beautiful but you drop quite a bit in elevation, which means you have to walk back up to get out of that. Very beautiful and peaceful with some amazing trees. We missed just a bit of the short hike since we took the longer trail but from what we saw you get a good feel for how amazing this forest is from the short hike. I feel it is worth seeing even if you only do the short trail.

Wow! So fun to hike this short trail in a beautiful forest of redwood trees. It is not arduous but still provides some wonderful outdoor experiences. Just hiking among these gorgeous trees lowers your blood pressure-guaranteed.

Any time you can walk amongst these spectacular giants ....
Anytime you can commune with these glorious ancients ...
Do it!
The groves of redwoods that dot the landscape, throughout the southern Oregon area, is amazing. This grove is really special. Take your time and feel the wonder that these trees send forth.
