We drove along Highway 19 by SW Main Road and found this second location; just 3 km away from the one in Port McNeill. Interesting, both locations claim to have the World's Largest Burl. Quick check found the one in Port McNeill is much bigger, so this one is now the World's Second Largest Burl.

If you are like us, if there is something close by on your travels that has a claim of 'The World's Lagest', you have to check it out!
While passing through Port McNeill we stopped to check out this Burl. It is huge! Took a photo, and read the sign and learn about what a Burl is exactly.

It's a bit hidden from the road, more like at the entrance of a parking lot by a playing /baseball field but it is interesting and you can read about its nicely detailed history. It's between the playground and the local museum by the waterfront. I don't think you are allowed to park there but you only need 5-10 minutes and there really is no one around -- this is a small town! If you are a tree enthusiast or love "world's biggest _____ /whatever," then make the trip to see it but I wouldn't go out of my way. There is in fact, another giant burl on the outskirts of Port McNeill at the entrance of Western Forest Products Inc. (1921 SW Main Road.) But this one in town is larger at 6 meters big!

It was nice that the history of the burl was available for reading and one can walk around the whole burl.

What to say about this. We arrived in Port McNeil and stopped off at the local tourist information booth, where the member of staff told us about this. At first we thought he was talking about a 'Pearl' and when he started holding out his arms to show us how big it was we were slightly sceptical. After a couple of minutes the penny dropped and we realised he was saying Burl (we had no idea what that was until we looked it up).
So the following day before we were due to leave we went to take a look and there it was, a very large Burl. It's a great photo op and it's not a great distance away from the harbour so well worth taking a look at.

Pictures cannot do this justice. Cannot believe this came from a tree! They do not advertise these (there are 2 of them) so take a look if you drive from Port Hardy to Port McNeil. One is near the museum in Port McNeil, the other is just at the top of a loggers track. Ask a local! I only knew about them from looking at YouTube

Very cool quick stop. There is a nice little playground nearby if you need to burn off some kids' energy.
I would recommend this one over the other one a few kilometers away that also comes up on Google Maps.

This is a fun quick stop in Port McNeill. There is a small plaque describing where and how this burl ended up here.

I didn’t think it would be a shame impressive as it is but it’s worth seeing. Easy walking distance from downtown.

What IS a burl, you ask? My sources indicate it is essentially a tree wart.
What is it good for? Great for veneer.
What possessed me to drive five km out of my way to take photos of this? I don't know.
