A must-see in my book. I will admit it was a bit of a walk to find it, but it is there. Looking at the pier, go right and walk about a mile or longer. The mailbox is set up on a dune. There is a bit of a hill to walk up, but it's not bad. The mailbox is surrounded by two benches. It is a great place to sit and reflect on what you chose to write in the notebook inside the kindred spirit mailbox. It's a cool place to visit.

We took the 1.5 mile walk to the mailbox today. My 94 year old grandma asked me to find it one day when we were in the area. She had read about it. I immediately had to read the Nicholas Sparka book after hearing of it. Talking the trip to it today was a great experience. To see it in person was truly moving. To see many other people stopping to read the notes within and share emotion. It was great. I will be sending the photos of it back home to my grandma.

Absolutely amazing experience! Well worth the long hot walk along the beach! Make sure to spend some time reading the journals...so inspirational. Many are tear-jerkers...but in a good way.

More than the mailbox, we enjoyed the walk along the quiet beach. We actually missed it on our walk and found it after we had returned from past the jetty. Beautiful sights!

I absolutely loved visiting the Mailbox. Be sure to take several bottles of frozen water and dress appropriately. Sunscreen is also a must. I read all four spiral notebooks and left a note of my own. The two mile hike was beautiful, but the climb on the small sandy hill to the Mailbox could be challenging for some. I'm 65, and I would do this again. Go early and park as close to 40th street as possible. Parking is free, and you can park at the pier, but the walk will be longer.

I had read about this mailbox in the Nicholas Sparks book entitled "Every Breath" and decided that I had to see it, especially since it is relatively near where I live. My husband and I went in January, on a cold, windy and sunny day, which was perfect because hardly anyone else was on the beach with us.
We finally reached the mailbox after a 1.4 mile walk. As we walked up the steep hill, we saw the notebooks and pens in the box for users to write entries. The view was spectacular. Both of us sat on the bench and wrote for a bit, as well as reviewed some of the entries in the books.
The whole experience was cathartic, peaceful, uninterrupted and beautiful. The best part was that no one else was there so we could immerse ourselves in the spirit in the mailbox with no other people to ruin it.

If you are into experiences that will warm your heart, this is it. After reading Every Breath by Nicholas Sparks, I was drawn to the mailbox. My husband and I have gone twice and hope to go again. The walk on the beach to the mailbox is beautiful as is
the little community of Sunset Beach. There are other novels based on the mailbox which I hope to read. Also many articles on internet.

The KS mailbox is a special place to visit when you go to Sunset Beach. I enjoyed reading the notes that were written. Some happy and some sad. It was very peaceful just to sit and read. But it is so worth the walk. It is a long walk so be sure to take water to drink.

The Kindred Spirit is a special place to visit when you go to Sunset Beach. This is a place you don’t want to miss!! We went on a Saturday in July around 10:30 and all 6 free parking spots were taken so we went back to the pier parking which was also full. They have a parking lot right next door and it’s $10 to park. It was a 35 min walk from 40th Street (we were dropped off and then one of us parked). There were 4 notebooks inside with many pens to write your deepest thoughts. Some were very moving and some just wrote their name. It’s based on Nicholas Spark’s book Every Breath. I highly recommend this.

Hi everyone! For our honeymoon we would like to visit the places where Sparks' books are set in, but we can't rent a car. Is it possible to reach Sunset Beach by bus?

There are a few hotels right in Sunset Beach. I would check out the listings on here for Sunset Beach. When I went to see this, I stayed with family.

Do you have to cross water and/or worry about tides? Anything else in terms of planning the timing of the trip. I am planning on walking down the the mailbox early in the morning and try to get some sunrise pics. But am a little worried about the tides.

I would check the times of high and low tides for that day before you go, as the beach may not be very wide during high tide. When I went, I had no problems getting there.
