we stayed in tierkloof tented camp for two days, and did a great hiking trail one day. the camps are super clean and neat, much nicer than many capenature resorts i have stayed in recently. the park management and staff is top notch, we will definitely be back. with the winter discounts this was excellent value for money.

We stayed in the Fossil Ridge tented camp in the Gamkaberg Nature Reserve for 3 sunny days. It was absolutely brilliant. Clean, beautiful design and very friendly staff. Great hikes and info on Xhoisan and fossils. The eco toilet was a first! We also had a lot of fun with the foxy "muishond", trying his best to get some food from the kitchen...getting away with a few eggs at the end.

Was pleasantly surprises, the tented camps are well maintained and clean. We stayed for two nights and plan to visit again.

We stayed at this reserve with friends taking the Sweetthorn Eco lodges. The tent lodges are very comfortable and well equipped as is the kitchen area. There is everything that you need for a lovely stay. The one thing that I really noticed was how clean and neat the lodges and area are kept. This is a real asset to the staff and management who were friendly and excelled at making sure we all had a good time.

Just to set matters straight: this Cape Nature Reserve has nothing to do with the West Coast National Park. The closest towns are Calitzdorp and Oudtshoorn.
It is a small reserve with three eco camps. Each has two or three luxury sleeping tents; a kitchen/living room with gas hob, fridge and hot water; ablution facilities also with hot water showers; a boma with braai facility with tables and chairs, also a small plunge pool. There is a beautiful kloof up to the top of the mountain with 14 km trail and a 4x4 route. Expect to see eland, rooi hartebeestbeest and possibly some Cape Mountain Zebra. Birds abound and the mix of fynbos, Karoo vegetation and Afro-montaigne forest in the kloof is fascinsting. Wonderful views across to the Outeniqwa mountains and the Swartberg.
Highly recommended for a quiet peaceful, breakaway.

Very quiet reserve - were we the only visitors that day? Great for an introduction to the area, the flowers and scenery and the walk up to the Overhang was not too tiring and well signed. We had hoped to see some wild zebra but they were elsewhere. Heard plenty of birds and it was lovely and warm after being in Cape Town (usually a good 10 degrees cooler)

We did not stay at the reserve, but visited it while in Calitzdorp area.
It was Sunday and the place was empty. The office looked closed, but we tried the door and it opened. soon after a very pleasant Cornelius entered and gave us lots of friendly tips and information. The information centre is excellent. We had a look at the tented accommodation, which was excellent.
Could not do the 4x4 trail, since our fuel was low, but went up to the view point and feasted our eyes on the spectacular view.

We spent 2 nights of absolute peace in Sweet thorn tented camp .... Night sky dripped stars, days of bird call, walking, cycling, but mostly relaxing at the camp in the hammock, bird-watching, reading and at peace . Night-time warmed ourselves at the open bonfire ( wood can be bought at reception )
Although the nights were cold, tents are cosy and with warm duvets. Will definitely return. Perfect half way shop between East London and Cape Town.

Luxury Camping at Gamkaberg
The Gamkaberg Nature Reserve reflects the little Karoo’s tranquility and silence. It also hosts the endangered Mountain Zebra and other mammals including the Ardvark, Ardwolf, Eland Red Hartebeest, Caracal and black-backed Jackal. As a haven for botanists, the park offers an abundance of South Africa’s biomes, namely, Fynbos, Succulent Karoo, Subtropical Thicket and Evergreen forest. Camping at Gamkaberg was of luxury proportions and it was difficult to feel we were camping in the heart of the mountains in the little Karoo on the outskirts of Oudshoorn. Attentive staff constantly checked if we were comfortable. I recommend this immaculate camp site in the remote little Karoo to both locals and visitors. You don’t need much to enjoy this camping experience and even if you forget your charcoal, kettle or your coffee mugs it won’t spoil your stay.
Although the terrain lends itself to day visits, the meticulously adequate accommodation provided, although rustic, is of 1st class standards. Three Eco-lodges built in safari-tent style offer well-planned outdoor luxury that includes a splash pool and deck to make those sun-downer moments memorable. The most affordable Stables and campsite are kept in pristine condition with added extras such as stove, fridge and immaculately maintained open kitchen with utensils and braai facilities. A two-day nature trail consisting of a 13 and 11 km moderately strenuous walk is commendable for those seeking the spectacular views of the Swartberg and Outeniqua mountain ranges. Easy day walks and 4 X 4 trails can also be enjoyed with less effort by the whole family. Bookings can be made online through Cape Nature.
