I enjoy going to the NJ Maritime Museum when I visit Beach Haven. In all the times I go there I discover something new. For a small museum, it has some of the most interesting and detailed displays of things like dives and ship wrecks, the history of the maritime industry and resort industry on Long Beach Island.
It would take several afternoons to really study the displays and the volunteers here do such a nice job explaining things if you need help. There are several videos running on fishing and diving for artifacts that are very interesting. Take time to view these as they explain the exhibitions.
This is the perfect rainy day activity and try to spend at least an hour at the museum to see everything. You will want to go back several times to see the exhibits.

It was a great place to kill a few hours. The tour guides were very knowledgeable about the history and told us very interesting stories. The rooms were comfortable and inviting. It was nice to sit and read some of the books and look through old letters and pictures.

The NJ Maritime Museum is one of those very underrated museums that has interesting displays and wonderful information on both local and New Jersey history of the shore region.
The exhibits on the 1916 Shark Attacks that inspired the movie "Jaws", the Castle Moro fire of the 1930's and the nautical exhibitions are very engaging and through. They tell an interesting story. The artifacts that are in the collection are excellent and well displayed. The staff at the museum is very engaging and will help you with any questions and are very proud of this museum.
The museum is also free but try to leave a donation as this small museum is a wonderful place to visit when you are visiting Long Beach Island.

Very nice museum that is well worth visiting if you are interested in the history of the area and the many different events that unfolded along the NJ shore. Also a well laid out museum covering the many sea related activities and businesses in the area. Antiques and artifacts galore and displays related to the Navy and Coast Guard. Well worth the visit.

I was overwhelmed with the vast amount of information available particularly regarding the numerous shipwrecks along the shore. Lots to look at and read about. Tons of artifacts. The staff are wonderful and clearly passionate about their research. They’re helpful and knowledgeable. Nice gift shop too

Wow! What a treasure trove of a variety of items from photos and old newspaper articles to diving suits, hats and model ships. This place is run by volunteers and, unlike a lot of other museums we've visited, this one is pretty dustless. We spent a little more than an hour here and could have spent the whole afternoon. We were fortunate to meet the founder and curator of the museum, a feisty woman who served as mayor of Long Beach for 10 years and is now on-call as an EMT. Her heart is really into preserving the naval history of the area.

I have to say that for a small museum I was very impressed by the amount of information that this museum covers. It is really an interesting and amazing place for a small museum at the shore.
There are rooms that cover shark attacks, luxury liner disasters, ship wrecks, shore erosion issues, Coast Guard information, local history dealing with the sea and shore and lots of artifacts from wrecks over the last three hundred years. I was impressed by the information on the 1916 Shark Attacks that inspired the movie "Jaws" and the disaster of many of the luxury liners even after what we learned from the Titanic ten years earlier. There are all sorts of eye witness accounts recorded and all sorts of artifacts.
There is a lot of information on Maritime history of the Jersey Shore and a lot about the resort history of the area. There is a lot on the resorts of not just Beach Haven but the surrounding shore towns.
Each room is packed with information and can be somewhat overwhelming unless you have a few hours to spend here like I did. I found myself leaving after over two hours.
Do not miss this little gem of a museum that is well worth the visit and has free admission. They ask for a small donation which is fair. The people who work here are very friendly and welcoming and will answer any questions.

Is the tour fun for kids? My 3years old girl is on vacation with me

I don't think she would be thrilled. It's mostly for older children (5 yrs. & up), but you never know! It would depend on how you present it to her. It's worth a try and it sure couldn't hurt.
