Slow down and enjoy all the geological aspects as well as the forest. Views off mountainsides and down by a river. Well worth going out of your way - with a full tank of gas.

This trail I would rate as EASY despite some reviews. It took us a total of 6 hours to complete from start to finish with a couple potty breaks and lunch worked in. If you have any off roading experience this trail will be cake. It is basically like a forest trail for most of it and 30 miles of it is even paved. We did not have to put our VERY capable lifted jeep wrangler into 4 wheel drive even once. Did 2 wheel drive the whole way. This was somewhat disappointing as we were expecting some challenges. We had heard rumors about the difficulty level of this trail and were surprised to find those rumors false.
I highly recommend filling the gas tank before you get out there. It would be a bad place to break down however we did the trail in Aug and did pass about seven or eight trucks total, several motor cycles and a group of side by sides. There were also people camping in some of the camp sites along the way. So even if you had car problems you'd eventually run into human contact it's not the most remote place I've ever been. I repeat: the trail itself should not give you any car problems. It's a forest trail.
That said there are a couple places on the trail that could be nerve wracking for novice drivers because of a steep drop on one side and narrow roadway making passing of another vehicle came from the other direction challenging, however there are plenty of pull out spots if you're used to off-roading this will not bother you in the least.
The visas are beautiful. Most were ravaged by a fire so it's almost got a creepy vibe but still amazing. It's a gorgeous day drive worth doing once.
We stayed in a hotel in Grangeville the night before the trail which is about an hour away from the start, then went across towards Darby. We finished the trail so fast (six hours instead of the expected 8 as other reviews stated) we were able to make it all the way to Idaho Falls before dinner on our way to Yellowstone.

Excellent trip in my 2001 Jeep Cherokee. Fire lookouts were all great. Road up to Burnt Knob should only be done in high clearance vehicle but worth the effort. We went from Darby Mt. to Elk city Idaho in one day but it took all day to do it. Next time we will stay at least one night on the Corridor in one of the camp grounds. My wife and I did it solo. Mostly adventure sport motorcycles and 4 other vehicles were all we saw.

We loved traveling the Magruder Corridor on our ATVs! It was a great trip and we would highly recommend it. Not sure I would take a car or regular pickup on this road, although we saw some who tried. It's rocky, steep and very narrow in places. It is perfect for ATV's. The side trips to the fire lookouts were all fantastic. We had perfect weather and the scenery was amazing.

The Frank Church and Selway/Bitterroot Wildernesses are beautiful to travel through on the Magruder Corridor. This years trip was a lot busier and rougher than our last trip about 10 years ago. We were in a oickup as a support vehicle for a couple 4-wheelers. There were a few other pick ups and SUV’s but the majority of traffic were ATtV’s and motorcycles. We hiked to a couple lookouts as Burnt Knob road was too rough for our long pick up and Salmon Mtn is only walking access. Both beautiful scenery and Salmon Mtn Lookout is staffed with friendly people.

I have ridden this road on a motorcycle 7 times, 4 times going east and 3 going west. The last week in September it usually snows, so be alert. We ran it in 6 hours in 2018 on KLR’s, which is not hard, but not many stops either. We were riding it west to east and stopped in Elk City to fuel a little after 12:00 noon. The locals in the Restrauant told us we could not make it to Darby before dark but we did. However I recommend an early start in case you have to deal with a breakdown.
The road has been different each year depending on the weather and the last time maintenance has been done. It can be rated from moderate to difficult sometimes. I have never been up Burnt Knob because of its difficulty for a heavy bike and it is too far from medical assistance. It is a side road and does not have to be traversed.
There is a hotel, fuel and Restrauant in Elk City, Idaho which is a good launch point going east and the same services are available in Darby, Montana going west. Be sure to have 120 miles of fuel and means to fix a flat because this road crosses 8 million acres of wilderness. Read up on the history of the road before going or stop at the one place with a sign telling the history about it. Enjoy your ride.

We rode east to west. Once you cross the Magruder Crossing the road gets very steep and rocky. It stays rocky and rough until you get to Poet Creek, from there it is easy to Elk City. It is not (in my opinion) an easy gravel road ride. The road is dual track with a lot of 2" t0 8" (and bigger) rocks especially between the tracks. There is also sand and a few ruts. It is challenging and requires some moderate skill on a heavy GS motorcycle. You need to be able to stand on your pegs and slowly navigate your motorcycle. If you can't do that - don't go. I'm just glad that I didn't meet any other vehicles (especially full sized pickups) in some of the steep or challenging rocky sections.

Can you drive a portion of the way up and safely do a u-turn to return back? Is there passing room on the road?

What is the best time of year to do this ride on a side by side? When does the snow usually melt?
Verfasst am 31. Dezember 2018
July through September is best. Going East to West is best. Beware after the Magruder crossing the road gets very steep, narrow, rough and rocky until you get to Poet Creek.
