The staff was super friendly and our guide Dave was very patient with my wife who is a rookie fly fisherman. Dave was very knowledgeable and even taught this “old pro” a thing or 2. He had us laughing all day and our lunch was top notch.

This will be my third year fishing with the Bitterroot Fly Company and I couldn’t recommend it more. The guides know the river so well and are very patient with all levels of fly fishers. Everyone here is so friendly and works to give you the absolute best experience possible. Shoutout to Shane, Dave, and Rob for being awesome guides!

Outstanding fly shop. Matt procided spot on fly recommendation for our wading trip prior to our float. Our float guide, Dave Buck was outstanding on all fronts. Newer equipment, raft, vehicle is well maintained and realiable. His water, fish and hatch knowledge kept us in fish.

I recommend without reservation the Bitterroot Fly Company for a guided flyfishing trip. Jim and Robert made our experience on the Bitterroot unforgettable. Both were imminently knowledgeable about the river and their local knowledge was incredible. Not to mention both are just good people and fun to be with. They were patient with our inexperience and made sure we had a fantastic day. I can't thank them enough for making our trip to Darby a fantastic experience. I am already hoping to get back for another run at it at the end of the summer.

Jim from Bitterroot Fly Company guided us on an outstanding day of fishing late May. The whole process was delightful from cheerful Bonnie booking us to Jim’s knowledge of every inch of the Bitterroot river. The shop is well stocked and we were able to get a polarized sunglasses and gator. Fly fishing novices , Jim’s instruction was spot on… and his patience with multitudes of detangling our rigs with a smile made us very comfortable. We stopped at mid-river sandbar and Jim whipped out a table cloth and presented an amazing Tritip taco meal with strawberry shortcake for dessert. Yum. Jim checked in on our needs (food/drink/shore breaks), was a pleasant conversationalist, and flexible to our fishing needs and skills. Coaching us on fly placement and cast pointers. Such an excellent adventure with great trout catches - we will back soon!

I’ve been doing floats with Jim and his guides since 2016 and it’s always a blast. I’ve had slow days with the fishing and days when I couldn’t keep the fish off my fly rod, but each time I enjoy my time out on the river. Jim and his guides are personable, knowledgeable, and patient. Aside from that they have a great fly shop and make you feel welcome when stopping in. Go with the Bitterroot Fly Company and you won’t be disappointed.

Recently we enjoyed floating the Bitterroot with our guide, Jim Mitchell. This was not our first float trip with him, So you can tell that we think highly of Jim and the Bitterroot Fly Company. We look forward to booking another trip with Jim.
Booking a trip through Bonnie is easy. Matt and Bonnie are very helpful at the shop. The Bitterroot Fly Company shop is well organized with key gear, apparel and special items. Jim is helpful, sharing tips throughout the day. He is patient, even if we lost a lot of flies hanging up on something in the water or a bush nearby, necessitating him to re-rig our rods many times.
Jim helps you succeed catching fish by identifying the fish habitat along the way where fish have been found and the techniques for success. He will often row upstream to give us another chance at a particular spot. Jim offered many helpful tips on fishing techniques and taught us some new skills. Since Jim Mitchell knows the river so well, he was able to alert us to the location of fishing hazards, such as roots or tree sections in the water.
Jim Mitchell is an experience guide that knows the ever changing conditions on the river. He can also spot those “fishy” areas and will point them out to you so that you can identify them for yourself and apply that knowledge for the future

I had a great experience with Bitterroot fly fishing and Jim Mitchell. I had never fly fished before and learned a lot of the process and enjoyed it to the point where I am planning my next trip.

I had the honor to spend a full day, and another ½ day with Jim on the river. Jim was a pleasure to fish with, and his knowledge and experience on the river was better than I ever expected. The folks in the fly shop provided outstanding service, and knowledge that help me fish the river another few days to walk and wade in the most beautiful and scenic landscape in Montana.
I plan to make this possibly an annual trip and will defiantly connect with the Bitterroot Fly Company.

On Sat, 2 Sept, my son and I experienced a half-day trip with BFC. We were concerned with the water levels on the Bitterroot West Fork, but we were told the river was still very fishable…and it was! Our guide (Robert) was very experienced (and a proud former Marine!). He was very informative of the various trout species and the productive flies. He switched things up to dry flies about halfway through the float, which produced a lot more action. The fish weren’t very big, but the quantity of strikes was awesome. This was only my son’s second float trip, so he was learning a lot, and Rob accommodated his inexperience level. Overall, it was a really fun trip and a great memory for us. Highly recommend!
