This visit was a positive experience. The volunteers who maintain and staff the aviation museum at the former Wurtsmith Air Force Base are knowledgeable and passionate about aviation history. They have stories to tell that make the history come alive.
The museum is open three days a week, four hours each of those days. Plan your visit, it’s worth the effort.
Check out the gift shop. It’s well-stocked with quality items. I chose airplane earrings from their jewelry collection.

This museum is a little gem just outside of Oscoda MI. We were not sure what we would find, but were pleasantly surprised with the exhibits that were located at the museum. We were greeted by an enthusiastic staff, and had the privilege of speaking with an Air Force Veteran by the name of Gray Taylor who provided a guided tour of a large section of the museum. Mr. Taylor is a true gem for the museum and region. His depth of knowledge not only around the former air base, but also all things military was amazing. We were so thankful that we were able to talk to Mr. Taylor and learn about the base and the activity that took place there during its years of operation. Well worth the visit and time spent. we also want to point out the Veteran's memorial that is located on the way into the base. We stopped on our way out to walk around a bit and share some of the tributes to our veterans.

Wonderful experience at the Museum. A lot of history with uncountable items and few aircrafts. I was luck to meet some veterans at the museum. Must do for children. And I brought B52 necklace and airings. A lot of aviation gift items in the shop.

Disclaimer: I am a member of the Wurtsmith Air Museum but traveled from Virginia this summer to spend time in the museum. Since 1994, the Wurtsmith Air Museum has upheld the mission of preserving the history of the history of Wurtsmith Air Force Base (an integral part of the US Air Force from 1923 until 1993) and aviation in Northeast Michigan. The museum's exhibits are extensive and incredibly high-quality -- including several aircraft that can be examined up close. The gift shop offers lots of Wurtsmith / Oscoda-specific items as well as customize-able dog tags! You can spend 30 minutes or a couple of hours taking in everything in three hangars on the site of the former Air Force base.

We visited the museum while in town to visit my son who had just moved to town. We all enjoyed the museum! There’s an amazing amount of items collected here. The staff members were all very friendly. We basically ended up with our own personal tour guide, who was a wealth of knowledge. Definitely worth visiting if you have any interest in US history, military, or airplanes.

We had a great time at the museum. The staff memebera are extremely friendly, and there are a lot of things for both old and young to keep busy. Our toddler loved sitting in the airplane and helicopter, and there is a huge airliner you can walk right up to. Overall awesome experience and will visit again.

We enjoyed going through this museum and saw several Vietnam era helicopters and history of over past wars and services of armed forces. We were visiting with our grandson who loves and works in the area

There were all kinds of different museum material here. It would be a very amazing place for someone interested in history or flying to visit.

It has facinating historical displays of a northeast Michigan Air Force base established before World War 2 and decommissioned after the conclusion of the Cold War. It is very creative and offers great historical and personal displays.

The town of Oscoda takes great pride in The Wurtsmith Air Museum and the history of the US Air Force as part of the fabric of the region. It is easily located along Highway F41 just about a mile from US Highway 23. The best time of year to visit the museum is in July when they have many extra activities to celebrate Independence Day. The museum has many aircraft, relics, memorabilia and artifacts on display. There is also the Circle of Flags located near the museum and the Ken Ratliff Beach Park directly acrossed Highway F41 on Van Ethan Lake which has a swimming area, boat ramp and picnic area.
