not worth the trek. lots of shell rock. lots if people. no longer a peaceful place, animals and naked people. college kids and weed smokers. not a sight for families and animals. I would not recommend!

The reviews I saw varied a lot...most said the hike had some rough spots but was doable, ok for children etc. For us it was very difficult. I'm 76 and not a hiker so maybe had no business out there...wife quite a bit younger but still getting back into condition after surgery several months ago. It was no 2 hour jaunt in and out for us I can tell you but we made it. Views are very nice and friendly people at the pools. An experience we shared and that counts for a lot. Don't be deterred by this review...it really is quite a spot...

Ignore any negative review about this hot spring as it is an amazing spring that can be just perfect if you go at the right time. Avoid weekends at any timeframe as the crowds will make it difficult to find space to soak. We arrived at 6:30 am and there were already 8 cars at the trail head. If you go on the weekday and during the early am and later on when the sun sets, you will get a majestic soak with unrivaled views. The hike is a little steep at the beginning and the end of the trail but even a timid hiker can tackle the minor challenges. We spent 3 hours soaking in the main pools under the bridge and watched a gorgeous sunset.

Goldbug now has at least 100 visitors every weekend and many dogs. The local fire chief has tested the water and tested positive for E coli bacteria. Was a great place years ago but now to many people. You may have a long wait to get in the pool as it is small.

Limited parking, waaaay too many people, and Bluetooth speakers playing loud enough for everyone to have to listen to "your" preferred music. If not for the natural beauty of the springs, it would only get one star, thanks to over-crowding by self-absorbed tourists.

This is a trail listed as "moderate" on AllTrails.com. It's near mile marker 282 on Highway 93. It's 2 miles in and back out. The first 1/4 mile is a difficult climb and on private property (BLM purchased easement) so make sure you're respectful. Once you pass through the gate, the trail becomes quite easy for the next 1.25 miles. The last 1/2 mile, I'd classify as "strenuous" becuase you are climbing up through rocks and it's quite steep. Just take your time...frequent breaks with lots of water.
Remember you're heading up to 6200 feet so if you're not used to the elevation, you'll need more breaks to catch your breath. When you get to the stairs, you're almost there so don't quit because the springs are wonderful! Bring water, snacks, water shoes, bathing suit (or shorts/t-shirt) for the hike and the soak. And don't forget your camera as the view from the top is amazing. Test the pools before getting in. Some are hotter than a hot tub. Some are lukewarm. We got in a pool with a little waterfall in the back so that water was cold but the pool of spring water was hot so it created a wonderfully balanced temperature. Very refreshing. The 2-mile hike out is much easier!

Drove to Goldbug from Sawtooth (~1.5h drive) before sunrise. Arrived at the trailhead at 8am, took us ~40min to hike to the top. Arrived at the hot spring before 9am and there were already many people there. Many folks camped in the park. There are only about 6 pools! I highly recommend getting there before 8am. Kids and families started to arrive around 10am.
Spectacular view and the hot spring is amazing! The pools are also deep enough to soak your entire body in.
FYI people do not practice social distancing there! So go early to avoid the crowds!

Goldbug Springs lived up to the hype! We started at 8am and only ran in to a handful of other people on our hike. When we were leaving around 11 there were several large groups with children headed up. It pays to head out early!
There is no parking lot, but plenty of street side parking. The first 1/4 mile is an uphill series of switchbacks, but it quickly flattens out. There is plenty of shade and multiple opportunities to take a break by the water. Soon the beautiful waterfalls begin and you know you’re getting closer.
The last 1/4 mile is the most challenging part of the hike. The trail is loose rocks, and it is necessary to scamper over several larger rocks. Don’t get discouraged, even when the trail seems to disappear, that means you’re almost there!
The views from the top are extraordinary. There are multiple hot springs. I was lucky enough to find a side pool where the cool water from the falls combined with the warmth of the hot springs. Heaven.
Bring plenty of water and wear sunscreen. I wore my bathing suit under my clothes and it worked. I didn’t find I needed water shoes.
Goldbug is a treasure, enjoy!

Expecting a natural spot of solitude. Instead it was as crowded as a public pool. Guess it has hit the internet so sad

I hiked in about 9:00 AM on a lovely September Thursday, clear skies and moderate temperatures. The trail starts with switchbacks and then meanders along the creek. Patches of shade, but mostly open. As you get closer to the springs the trail gets rockier and you have to do some scrambling. As long as you take your time and watch where you put your feet, no problem, although my knees were grumpy. Took a bit over an hour.
There was a small pool just before the bridge to the others which looked nice but I pressed on and found four people in a larger pool, half suits half not so I didn't need to wear one.
Lovely view down the valley, the water was warm but not hot, and a nice waterfall dropped into the back of the pool.
I had made the mistake of not bringing some water shoes and it's rocky enough that wandering around to the other pools was not practical in bare feet.
That late in the season the sun didn't come onto the pool until about late in the morning, which my fair complexion appreciated.
Even mid-week September there was a steady trickle of people coming in. A few were camped nearby. One young family brought their son, maybe four? They might have carried him part of the way but he appeared to be having a great time.
The hike back out was easier, but some of the steep bits were interesting.

What time did you go and was it busy? We’re interested in enjoying the spring alone so if it needs it be an early hike, we are ok with that!

Can you van camp (dispersed camping) in the parking area for Goldbug Hot Springs?

Has anyone been to this in the winter (Dec-Mar) ? Is it doable and marked well enough?
Verfasst am 6. Dezember 2017
I haven't been there in the winter, but my sister lived in Salmon long enough to go there many, many times. She says the trail is very well marked and passable 365 days a year.
Verfasst am 6. Dezember 2017
Look for mile marker 283 south of Salmon on hwy 93. There's a dirt road heading east to the trail head. There is a vault toilet there.
Please remember to pack out. There are lots of complaints about trash along this spring. Enjoy!

Where can a family stay around here? Would love to visit at some point

If you like camping, there's a great spot about 20 minutes south called Cottonwood Recreation Site in Ellis, ID.

Is this spot accessible on foot this time of year (early to mid-March)? My 6-year-old will be going, and we're not afraid of hiking, but he's not the best at snowshoeing or cross-country skiing yet, and we don't have access to snowmobiles.
Verfasst am 2. März 2016
You can go any time of the year. Snowmobiles and cross-country skis would not be an option for this trail. Skis might be OK for part of it, but there are some sections with stairs and rocks that wouldn't be ski-friendly.

Is this hike too difficult for kids to hike? My kids are 9, 7 and 4 and love to hike.
