I have not been on a horse for at least 60 yrs. One day I thought I would like to learn how to ride in a country setting away from the hustle of cars , TV and all other forms of media entainment. I checked out places online and of course all the old stables are long gone. Actually for the best because back then horses were not treated well and could be mean to riders of all levels. I was happy to find Shadow Glen where the beauty of trees, expansive spaces near a quite lake. When we first arrived we were greeted with a couple of goat's exotic chickens roaming free, a sweet cat and friendly dog. Best of all a sprited young lady named Lyssa came out to answer all the questions we wanted to know about the stable's, staff, rides and lessons they had to offer. I looked out to see many horses with plenty of room to roam, rest or just give us a look. I felt very positive and wanted to set up a time to ride however it was still 102 and decided to wait till it cooled down a bit. I waited till the middle of Sept. and have been taking a lesson and trail ride every week for about 2 months. I plan to continue indefinitely for these reasons. All the folks who have worked with me have their own special skill that helps me build confidence. Luke is both a trainer and trail guide. He challenges me when I'm taking a lesson. I need that. Lyssa has a remarkable skill finding the right horse to fit each individual rider. She picked out two horses that fit my needs She also has a great sense of humor.. Jessica is good especially on a trail ride. She is easy going and her love of horses is clearly understood as well as her interest in the people she takes out. I also noticed that she is watching out for me, my horse and her's. She makes sure we are safe while taking in the awesome views of the surrounding areas. Amber has gone out with me a few times and I like the way she keeps me on track even if I'm not in a lesson she will correct me if needed. I do appreciate that. Today I went out on a trail ride with about 4 young girls and two mothers. I rode in back and watched Luke and (sorry I forget his name) but he was the wrangler heading up the trail ride. These two men were talking to the kids, helping them relax and having fun\et they never took their eyes or minds away from the duties taking a group of first time riders out for an hour. I swear these guy's had four sets of eyes each. They knew when to stop if necessary and reminded them when to lean forward or back depending on the slope. I observed that everyone was having a wonderful experience and like myself they will want to ride again. When we got back they took some pictures form as many phone as they were given so each person could remember what a fabulous day it was. Now it's almost the middle of Nov. and still going twice a week yet each ride is a new discovery. I can say sincerely from the first time I came to explore this facility leading into a new journey in my life I feel stronger and realize that age dosen't have to hold me from doing what I want. I have brought a friend and a few more want to go riding. They are all, well let's say over 70. Your never too old or too young to learn the magnificent horse that has been around, used world wide as the most important tool since civilization of humankind. I strongly suggest you take little trip to the country and inquire about this place. The horses are treated with respect and well looked after. Oh, forgot to mention. If you call you might talk to Stephanie who is often overlooked but is the person who keeps the details to schedule days and times plus so much more. She is very nice to talk to when making that first call. The owner is Terry Howard and he is in the background making sure everything is humming along because there is plenty of activity making sure horses get new shoes and kept well fed. I tried to keep this review short however when you find the love of horses and the place where they are at then I can't say enough. Thanks Shadow Glen Janis Rich-Smith

I had never been to Shadow Glen Stables and thought it was cute country feel. Staff were very friendly checking us in for the ride. When they brought the horses out I was disappointed to see that most of the horses were covered in dried mud. They said the horses were groomed daily but my horse had dirt caked in it's mane. Made it hard to even pet the horse during the ride. Trail ride guide staff was very good but overall I left feeling sorry for the horses.

The owners have cared for (and loved) all four horses that I have owned in the past eight years. The facilities are well-maintained and clean as a whistle. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable, and always helpful. I chose Shadow Oaks to semi--retire my horse because I knew that he would be taken care of by folks who would treat him like one of their own.

Only place maybe where you can as beginner ride on a decent trail on well trained quiet horses within 70 miles of here. Owners are good with horses and people. Do not fear if you have never tried this before. Staff gives a brief pre ride lesson, helps you to climb aboard and get comfortable. Then shows you the gentle easy way to ask the horse to walk. Generally this is a slow walk horse ride so do not fear there is no leaping over poles or a galloping pony express run. It is just fun easy and relaxing. If you join a group ride everyone stays together in a single file so a bit difficult to grab photos or to have long conversations but still quite nice. If you are a bit more advanced your leader may lead your group off on some different trails or do and try a few more experienced hilly sections or even a brief trot. Don't expect more advanced riding if you are in a group of many first timers. This will be a day where everyone is in a good mood …..horses....staff ….. and riders. Its just a simple and happy experience. Its also quiet....just the leather of saddle and stirrups making sounds and the horses breathing and talking to you and to other horses. Enjoy. .

Visiting the Stables was an awesome experience. The people were very friendly and courteous and showed us the place. The staff shared some their experience and the place itself is very well maintained.

We took one of our grandkids here for her birthday to ride a horse for the first time ever. The great folks at Shadow Glen took excellent care of her, put her on the perfect animal, and the girl had the time of her life. The staff makes every effort to match the rider to the horse for the type of ride you want and for the experience level you have as rider. Can't say enough good things about our experience at Shadow Glen. I have lived in the area for over 40 years and this place has been there as long as I can remember. The stables are on the edge of the state park near the American River and Lake Natoma, and there are scenic trails that take you through the park that can only otherwise be accessed by walking/hiking.

We love visiting stables and meetimg all the horses... we've gone in Africa, Maui, Puerto Rico and many other places. So far this is the best place we have been to as far as the facilities go. Lots of open space, chickens, goats and more. Also its very clean.
The trail is nothing fancy... after all its Sacramento- so theres no ocean, beaches, villages, etc. Still my kids LOVED the horses. I rode one that was given to them from an Indian Chief. It was a beauty.

Fantastic family outing! I'm 65 and took my daughter and 2 granddaughters (ages 9 and 11) for an hour ride. Within 15 minutes of starting out, I heard, "I want to do this again for my birthday!", from the girls. After a brief instruction while in the saddle, we were given the reins. We were in total control of our own horse (or mule) and not tied together. We enjoyed riding through and learning about the early California (Goldrush) area around Lake Natomas. We even rode along part of the famous "Pony Express" trail. Everyone had smiles on their faces for the entire hour. The staff is very knowledgable about the area and its history and expertly will pair you with a horse fit for your specific needs. We LOVE this place, and can't wait to enjoy a ride again! Yeeehaww!!

I've been boarding at Shadow Glen for over a year now & I love it! The immediate access to the American River trails is great. But that's not the best part, the facility owners take OUTSTANDING care of all the horses. It's great to know my horse is watched over all the time (even during middle of the night thunderstorms)! The other boarders are great... It's a very friendly, welcoming stable. So if you want piece of mind that your horse is taken care of & a "no drama" place to board Shadow Glen is it!
