Awful, horrible staff, very rude. Avoid! Very unwelcoming the manger was horrible and rude. Will avoid this place and advise others to do the same.

Disheartening Experience at Thorpe Woodlands Adventure centre.
We had high hopes for Thorpe Woodlands Adventure Centre, given its reputation for providing engaging and safe activities for children. Unfortunately, our recent experience has left us deeply disheartened.
My children recently attended the centre and initially had a wonderful time. The variety of activities and the natural surroundings seemed perfect for a fun and adventurous outing. However, things took a deeply concerning turn during one of the activities.
One of the activity leaders inexplicably decided to push my child into a deep body of water. This particular child is not a strong swimmer and struggles with going underwater, making the situation even more distressing. Moreover, my child didn't even have time to take a breath before being pushed in, heightening the danger and fear in what should have been a safe environment. To add to our dismay, my child is also recently bereaved, a fact that makes this incident all the more upsetting.
What is baffling is why the leader thought it was appropriate to single out my child in such a manner, especially when none of the other children were pushed into the water. The quick and simple apology offered by this leader is far from satisfactory, and the lack of assistance provided to help my child out of the water is inexcusable.
I am left wondering about the training and judgment of the staff at Thorpe Woodlands. This incident has overshadowed any positive experiences my children may have had and has left us all feeling very disappointed and upset.
I am asking for a full and thorough explanation from the centre manager regarding this unacceptable behavior. The safety and well-being of children should always be a top priority, and in this case, Thorpe Woodlands Adventure Centre has fallen severely short.
I hope that the centre takes immediate steps to address this issue and ensures that such incidents do not occur in the future.

This review is really unfair and very misleading. We have done our best to reach out to you and invited you to come and look at how our sessions are run as well as talk to the instructor that was running the session you describe. It is so disapointing when somebody posts a bad review like this as we work incredibly hard to ensure that all of our groups have a safe and enjoyable experience.
As you know - your daughter chose to jump in the river along with many of her classmates at the end of a canoe session. She was wearing a correctly fitted bouyancy aid and was laughing and joking soon after coming out of the water. She did slow down as she approached the edge of the platform and the instructor (one of our most caring and kind instructors) gave her a nudge so that she would not hit the edge of the platform - this is standard practice for us and has helped avoid injury on many occasions.
I understand that you are unhappy about your daughter jumping into the river but leaving such a negative review is just not fair.

We are a group of 8 women, all over 50 and visited Thorpe Woodlands for an activity day which included 3 activities. The site has a wealth of different activities but we chose Canoeing which was a hoot, the river is wide most of the time but narrows in places making it more of a challenge. We then did a team building assault course which at first glance seems easy. The course was really well designed and thought through as you couldn't complete the obstacles without working as a team. There were other problem solving/team working challenges which were also excellent. We then opted for archery which was well set up and we had ample time to get competitive. Our instructor for the day was Lydia who was just fantastic and made sure we had a great experience. I cannot recommend this venue enough. I have been to a lot of activity day centres and Thorpe Woodland is by far the best. One of our group works at a school and will be recommending the venue for their annual year 6 residential trip.

Arrived for canoe hire last Thursday and the heavens opened, heavy rain, thunder and lightning. Unbelievably told it was still safe and the session could not be cancelled or moved. Decided ourselves that it was not safe and so left. Terms and conditions say will be refunded due to weather conditions but this is not defined. Emailed them a week ago but no response. Very disappointed with experience, my advice would be to avoid.

I'm sorry to read this review. I think your booking was with Forest Holidays so please contact them with regards to refunds. At Thorpe Woodlands our policy is to offer refunds if we cancel the session - we don't usually cancel for rain but we do cancel if there are localised thunder storms.

I visited Thorpe Woodlands for the first time whilst supervising a group. Firstly, the instructors were brilliant and the poor score should not reflect on them. The group completed the high ropes and free fall drop activities along with zip wire and had an amazing time. As a keen climber myself, I did have a couple of concerns that I would like to see addressed:
Firstly, there is no physical barrier preventing children approaching the drop at the top of the tower. They’re told to remain behind a yellow line painted on the floor, but this is easily forgotten by an excited child. A simple rail across at waist height to form a waiting area under which the child can duck once they have been safely clipped on would seem a basic precaution.
Secondly, I’m surprised that Thorpe Woodlands continues to use sit harnesses with such young children. They lack the hips needed to retain the harness should they invert. Whilst inversion is rare with top roped climbing it is quite possible with things like the zip wire and free fall drop where the child may lay backwards as they do not recognise the importance of sitting up in the harness. Whilst I recognise that the equipment fulfils the minimum safety requirements, I fear that the choice of harness may be guided by price or ease of fitting rather than what offers the greatest safety.

This is a really frustrating review - I'm interested to know if you dicussed any of your concerns with staff during your visit? I'm certain that your fears about safety would have been quickly allayed.
All participants are briefed about staying behind the yellow line at the top of the climbing tower while waiting their turn. If the instuctor feels that the group are likely to struggle with this instruction they will request that they stay at the bottom of the tower and call them up one or two people at a time. The instructor is the physical barrier between participants and the gap in the railings. There are two chains which are placed across the gap when not in use.
With regards to the use of sit harnesses - we do use a chest harness or full body harness for any participant with ill-defined hips. We have at least 20 sets available at all times and we use them regularly. Our choice of harness is absolutely nothing to do with cost or meeting 'minimum safety standards'. We work closely with our technical advisor (MIA qualified) to ensure that we are using appropriate equipment and that our operating proceedures are reviewed regularly. We have an excellent safety record and I'm pretty sure you would struggle to find many outdoor centres that use full-body harnesses as standard.
I'm not sure what your background is Spongybob (I suspect that you are a scout leader who has completed a basic climbing course) but if you had legitimate safety concerns I would have thought it better to discuss this during your visit or by sending an email rather than posting a potentially harmful review on Tripadvisor. Previously have enjoyed activities here however this year was told we only getting to do half the usual activity then when we complained our guide Naomi who spent most of the time looking at her phone, became sarcastic and rude, such a shame very disappointed.

My fifth visit here for a school residential (4 days/3 nights) and it’s still fantastic. The kids love it, as do us staff. The many and varied activities are exciting, the accommodation is perfectly adequate, and the food is filling and kid-friendly. All of the instructors and other staff are lovely, well trained and great with the kids. I would highly recommend Thorpe Woodlands for a year 6 residential - it’s one of my highlights of the school year, and it was good to be back.

We had an impromptu family climbing session with Mike who calmly and professionally encouraged us and coached us as we climbed pine trees 20m high and scaled climbing walls before stepping off of a 10m high platform! (All rigged up to harness’ of course)! We would highly recommend Mike as an activity leader. He was great fun and very laid back and brilliant with our three kids aged 8, 6 and 4. He allowed us the freedom to have the most fun we’ve had as a family whilst somehow feeling like part of our family! Thanks Mike for such an exhilarating and fun couple of hours climbing at the centre. We can’t wait to come back!

We booked the residential centre for our group of adult friends with our children . 6 families compromised of 12 adults and 12 children aged 1-8 years. To be honest we were worried it was going to be bit uncomfortable as no sofas , fireplace, tv etc for adults to lounge in evenings and not exactly a luxurious get away. However we were all pleasantly surprised . The bunk beds were comfy and the showers all clean and good working order . The big kitchen had all equipment needed to cook for 24 of us. The large hall allowed for children to play burn off steam and the centre was so warm we felt cosy in the evenings we could congregate away from the bedrooms. The weather was mostly dry so we could get outside but if it had of rained the large space in hall meant we could have provided activities for the children running about indoors adequately as entertained .
We enjoyed the outdoor space and walk in woods exploring aswell as the campfire which the children all enjoyed toasting marshmallows . When the children are older definitely will be booking activities as all look fun! Will definitely return. Adults able to relax together and children had the best time .

We've just spent the weekend here for "Ticfest", a Tourettes Action event. And we had an amazing time! The activities staff were so good.. I must mention in particular, Amber, who was just superb. She took our group af children, with various additional needs, Autism, Tourettes, ADHD to name a few, and she delivered a perfect selection of activities, high rope, raft building and just understood her audience so well, the kids loved her. 😊
So I highly recommend this place, very nice location.
