A site I remember going down years ago, so pleased to see it open again. It's now got a proper staircase, easier than the ladder it used to be! The children loved going down back in time and pretending to be flint miners. One negative comment: the commentary & projection on the walls was unnecessary really, as it detracted from experiencing the pit. Just some subdued light on the walls would have been enough. The show could have been saved for the visitor centre at the top, or at least longer pauses between replays. The children loved exploring the wider site too, trying to see how many of the pits they could get into.

Visited Grime's Graves 20-30 years ago and have always intended to return some day. Glad we waited until now as the new visitor centre, film projection etc opened in April 2024 have much enhanced it.
By chance it was a lovely sunny day for our visit which enhanced our walk around the extensive site and it was nice to sit on a bench with an ice cream.
My only gripe, the only reason for only giving 4 stars, was the disgusting state of the portaloos. Get some proper toilets and hand basins installed please. Until then, please clean the portaloos.

We were in the area and decided to stop in. It was a really good experience. The landscape is interesting and there is a path around it. Descending into the flint mine was well done and we had no issues going down the steep, ladder like stairs. I thought the projections were pretty nifty.

Has a fabulous time. Weather was kind. Fascinating site. LOVE the new building and the trip down into the mine. Would love to see others opened up!
Toilets were a fright (one portaloo in operation, festival standard) and shop sells basic ice creams and drinks. Plenty of tables to sit at. A lovely informative visit and we headed off to Castle Acre for refreshments, and enjoyed another fabulous site.

At first sight there is little to see on an empty heathland; but persevere, this is a place of tremendous interest, the flint mines are of world significance. The marked trail takes you around the site pointing out points of interest. The descent into the mine is very interesting but have too cater for "Health and Safety " issues but fascinating nevertheless. However I could have done without the obtrusive light show which detracted from the feel of an ancient world.
There is no cafe, so bring a picnic and the toilet facilities are quite primitive,just portaloos, but it is a "must see "place.

Despite the foul weather (driving rain, mud and cold....in July!!!) youngest son (16) and I throughly enjoyed our visit to Grimes Graves. Being able to descend into one of the mines was just amazing and so atmospheric. The three staff on duty were very knowlegable and answerd our question with enthusiasm and in great detail. The site is well laid out without being overdeveloped....some might call it basic (portaloos at the entrance) but this means that the small but informative visitor centre does not impinge on the overall integrity of the site. Loved it!

Stunning walk back in time 4000 years to when our ancestors were mining flint with just antler picks and animal scapular. A real living history experience.

Friendly helpful staff.
No significant catering facilities on site; best to take your own.
Picnic tables available in a lovely setting.
Viewing 'mine' spoilt by rendering over the original flint seams (health and safety gone mad!)
Time needed about one hour (minus any picnic arrangements).
Costings about right for the facilities but of course this is a fairly unique place and worth a trip back in time.

Much better than I expected. Well worth a visit if you are passing. Going down into the flint pit was an excellent, if slightly hairy, experience with an informative short video projected on the pit walls. An interesting experience.

Previously, one descended into the pit past ferns and lichens at the top and then layers of white chalk and flint. The pit has now been given a beige rendering that obscures all of this. At the bottom one is greeted by music and cartoon characters projected onto the wall, with a voice describing the lives of the miners. The experience has been ruined, probably irrecoverably, given the rendering of the rock face. The attendant said this was for health and safety reasons in case a stone fell on someone. Presumably that was why helmets were always provided, to mitigate this insignificant risk. The correct place for the projection of cartoons is, surely, the museum in the reception building where one could choose whether or not to see it. I am amazed the archaeological consultants to English Heritage allowed this to happen. It almost amounts to vandalism of a unique site of international significance.
