1. Use WhatsApp. Emails and texts are not really the way to communicate. This applies to most situations I have found in Panama from outside the country. Daniel was very easy to communicate with once we started using WhatsApp.
2. Have cash! He charges a surcharge for using any form of payment other than cash. Yes, we could send him PayPal, etc., but he charges extra, so bring enough cash to give to him in person.
3. There are quite a few boat options. Sailboats and pangas etc. A panga is an open-holed vessel with a motor. It was the off-season, so he had quite a few to choose from when we arrived. We actually switched from a sailboat to a panga, and it was much easier to get around, especially because there were days when there wasn’t much sun or days that would’ve been tricky to sail without wind. The pangas are the same as most of the water taxis. And it was really ideal.
4. Stay away from rough waters, or where the water starts to meet the ocean. Even going over to Carenero Island can get iffy, depending on where you decide to dock. We were able to eat at one of the restaurants, but as you go down the beach just a few more restaurants, it starts to meet the rough ocean, and it’s really hard to navigate the boat. Daniel will tell you that as well.
5. Visit with Daniel for a while. Have a beer. Have him explain the maps to you. It’s a new system and a new app if you’re accustomed to just using Google Maps. Sit down and take a look at some fun things to do with him, and then you’ll feel really great about renting a boat with confidence.
6. He was super flexible. We decided to move our pick-up a day because we needed to take advantage of some upcoming weather where it was not going to be rainy, and he was really flexible with pick-up and drop off.
7. If you’re going to restaurants, most of them have a place you can dock at and tie up, but some of them only allow you to park for a little bit because they use that side for the water taxis. So don’t be surprised if someone comes rushing out and says that you can’t park there, even while you’re eating. You can always park at Daniel’s place and go in to Boca‘s if you need to.
8. Panama Sailing is hard to find! It does not seem well-marked; it is in Boca‘s town, but sort of towards the end, in what starts to get to be a little residential. It will be there, but GPS did not take us straight to it, and we started to panic a little bit and worried we could not find it.

We had a group of 12 people and wanted to be out on the water and sail somewhere. I finally found Daniel and he was able to accommodate a group of our size. We met him at the boat dock and off we went. It took us about 60 minutes or so to get to Starfish beach. He provided snorkeling gear. We opted to eat at Starfish Beach instead of through Daniel. In hindsight, probably would have been better to eat with Daniel. On the way back he offered to make a stop at one of the floating bars but we had 6 kids with us who were ready to get home. We sailed back. It was a great day out on the water.

Extremely disappointing. Captain Daniel would appear to be quite the character, but he does not sail anymore - at least he didn’t with us. We had a young Spanish speaking sailor in charge of our tour, no English - so no stories, no communication. The boat’s engine has some major challenges; it took us three hours to get to Starfish Beach - was supposed to take 90 minutes. Three hours out, two hours back, barely two hours at the beach, no other snorkeling - five hours on an excruciatingly slow boat with no stories, no background, just us and our non-speaking guide/sailor. Nothing on the boat worked - no water to wash hands after using the head, no hand sanitizer - the boat is in major need of a revamp. When we got back and talked to Captain Daniel, he barked at us - “it is what it is - it’s the ocean”. Of course, this is true, we know that - but please don’t market it as a great day with three hours at Starfish Beach, plus a snorkeling stop, when that very well may not be the case. Don’t tell us you will regale us with stories, etc., when you don’t even sail anymore. And, please, do some maintenance on your boat! Most importantly though, please learn some customer service skills.

If you want to explore the beauty of Bocas Del Toro in the best possible way, I would look no further. Daniel and Captain Barbosa are amazing at what they do, and will bring you to the best places and make sure you have ton of fun and are well taken care at the same time. We had a blast going on two day trips with them, and we looking forward to the next.

Daniel was so amazing at accommodating our request to sail when the sail broke the day before. He borrowed one from another sailer! He is very communicative and fair with the pricing.
Kadir was our captain and was so much fun! I’ve taken a sailing course before and wanted to refresh and learn. He let me be captain and taught me along the way. He took us to an amazing snorkeling spot! I loved hearing about his adventures as a captain all over the world!

Daniel and captain Barbosa are the best. The sailing cat is spacious and well equipped. Sailing Almirante bay and Starfish Beach was brilliant. Beautiful tropical waters and white sandy beaches. An awesome adventure for everyone.
Thx Daniel !

PD. Prepara un ceviche delicioso.
