Tour of BC Aviation Museum and Restoration of Lancaster FM104.
The B.C. Aviation Museum (BCAM) in North Saanich, B.C. is simply an absolute gem. The knowledgeable and obliging staff at this wonderful facility will make your visit to this fabulously curated collection of vintage WWII and other aircraft a highlight of your trip to British Columbia. Situated adjacent to Victoria International Airport, it is central to the rich aviation environment surrounding this location.
No matter what your level of knowledge of aviation and its history, the wonderful folks here will both entertain and educate you. Their knowledge of their collection and associated historical footnotes are remarkable and they are generous with their time and loaded with entertaining anecdotes. You have to get here and meet, among others, Larry and Mike, two of BCAM’s finest tour guides.
The highlight of my visit was an extensive tour of the restoration hangar, currently home to the restoration of Avro Lancaster Bomber FM104, which used to reside at the Downsview Aviation Museum in my hometown of Toronto. When I last saw it in Toronto it was in very sad derelict condition . It is now being given a new lease on lease through the enormous efforts of a dedicated restoration team. You will never see the details of a Lancaster as intimately as you can see them now, totally dissembled and being readied for static display, along with one Merlin engine which is being restored to operating condition. In a word, this restoration effort is breathtaking. To see the disassembled structures of this wonderful and historic warbird is a rare gift, and the extensive knowledge and charm of indefatigable tour guide Mike McGaw and his genuine enthusiasm for sharing his vast knowledge with guests made every nook and cranny of the exhibit a treasured adventure. The work being done is extensive, and you have to see it to fully appreciate both how beautiful the plane is in every detail, and the huge amount of work required to undertake and execute a project of this magnitude. With several years of work already completed, and at least five years of remaining, It is hard to believe that the Victory Aircraft plant in Malton (near today's Toronto Pearson International Airport) turned out one whole Lancaster every day during World War II.
This place is a bucket list MUST see. Do allow yourself a few hours to fully immerse yourself in aviation history and get to know the collection and the wonderful folks at this truly amazing museum.

The tour guide was excellent, very knowledgeable. He got us into restricted areas. Got into the cockpit of the Lancaster. Took lots of photos

A great place to visit with lots to see and experience. The museum has vastly expanded in the last few years. Besides the Martin Mars they have a TCA airliner, which you can go inside, and an CF104 fighter on display.

So much to see and learn. We only had about an hour but wished we had more. The aircraft are well displayed and the volunteers are passionate and engaging (shout out to Dan P.). Overall a great experience!

So interesting! We visited for 2 plus hours, and had the good fortune to connect with a volunteer guide who was friendly and super knowledgeable. He gave us access to things we wouldn’t have been able to see otherwise, like the area where museum volunteers are restoring a Lancaster and the interior of a TCA passenger liner from the late 1950s. Highly recommend the BC Aviation museum.

Wow….what a great experience! We had family visiting and someone suggested this could be interesting and boy…were they right! The rebuilt planes are meticulously created and we were lucky enough to have a free guide who walked us through the whole place giving us fascinating stories and sharing the rich history of it all. One of our best museum experiences and would highly recommend.

Brilliant! Were first there 35 years ago when they were open maybe a year or two, and the experience has expanded but remained wonderful! Great docents and volunteers to help anyway they can.

I brought 386 RCAC to the Museum for the 10:00 Sunday opening.
They not only accommodated 48 cadets, with a huge highway coach, but also a full parking lot of visitors.
From a commercial drivers point of view-it looks scary on the satellite imagery.. but if they know you are coming, and the spare lot is open, it’s an airfield of room to maneuver in after you drop off your passengers.
Amazing location, amazing province, amazing country.

Great little museum with some really interesting exhibits. Worth getting a guide which we did and he was very knowledgeable and helpful. Mostly Canadian aircraft with just a few foreign ones.

Blew our expectations away. It was larger than expected and the tour guide Norm was informative, knowledgeable, and made the experience better than we thought it could be. 10/10

Yes, but I can't remember what it was, and it is not on their website. You can call 250-655-3300 during daytime hours to find out.

Hi
We would like to come with a two year old to visit the museum on Saturday afternoon or Sunday morning. The little boy absolutely loves planes and would find it a dream come true to be able to sit in one. Can you let me know the hours of operation so that we don't get out there and find we are disappointed?

Open from 10:00 to 4:00 during the day thru Sept. 30th. You would have to keep an eye on him. We were with a group of 4 people so small group setting. I think he would enjoy it for sure. It is not overwhelming like some museums I have been to in Seattle and other places, really enjoyed it!
