lovely walk
Aug. 2020
This is a lovely walk, joined it in Uppermill and walked to Delph. Only downside is there were multiple dog owners who let their dogs off the lead but are unable to control them! Other than this, it’s a perfect walk!

Nice walk from Delph to Uppermill
Mai 2019 • Freunde
Started from The Old Bell in Delph with a view to taking a canal boat trip. Unfortunately the canal boat is up for sale. However we had a lovely afternoon in Uppermill some lunch and a bit of shopping. The route along the railway was pretty and easy.

Good walk to Uppermill

Easy walk along a disused railway track through woods - good surface, no steep gradients - pubs at either end !! Beware of cyclists.

You must find this walk
Jan. 2019 • Familie
The disused railway line that used to carry the famous Delph Donkey is a peaceful and easy walk between Delph and Uppermill.

For people walking in the Saddleworth area this is a must.

Great walk in the disused railway line. Good views of Delph, the canal and the viaduct. Spectacular engineering all those years ago!

Peaceful and pleasure walk to explore local history of Uppermill
Okt. 2018 • Allein/Single
The Delph Donkey was a line of the London and North Western Railway (LNWR) in northern England which opened in 1849 to connect Oldham, Greenfield and Delph to the main Huddersfield to Manchester line.

From Uppermill Library car park, cross the river using the stepping-stones, onto and along the canal to Brownhills Visitor Centre, stay awhile to look over the exhibits and attractions and walk around the nature reserve. After crossing the canal over the famous Lime Kiln Lock you can make your way to Clough Bottom Nurseries if you wish, for a browse round or just a coffee (and cake!), on to the
'Delph Donkey', an old railway, then climbing to Saddleworth Golf Course, with superb views. Next make your way back downhill, over the railway and into the centre of Uppermill, for shopping and more refreshments if you wish.

Passenger trains ceased to run on the Delph Donkey in April 1955, although a limited number of freight trains continued to use the line until November 1963.[3] The track was lifted in 1964 to turn the line between Oldham and Grotton into a cycle/walk way; the line between Moorgate and Delph became the Delph Donkey Trail footpath and bridleway, on which the halts at Dobcross and Measurements are now marked by replica station nameboards. The section of the railway between Greenfield and Grotton was either abandoned as waste land or converted into small footpaths; a section of the line that ran below Grasscroft through Friezland is now part of a large housing estate.

As of 2012, there remain old pieces of track outside Bailey Mill at the old Delph terminus that have not been moved since the closure almost 50 years ago.

Easy traffic free cycling path
Juni 2018 • Paare
This is a fairly short but fun little path which is just great for cycling or for a nice walk. It has some interesting spots, such as the Materials train station of which there is barely anything left. It offers a lovely countryside feel although it is close to a few villages. It is easily accessible from Station Approach in Delph. Please don't be put off by the path as initially it looks poorly maintained at the dilapidated mill, once you pass this very short bit, the path is in great condition and offers access to Uppermill through the canal. I almost didn't put this on TripAdvisor because we love coming here because it is pretty quiet and not overly used.
