A very special place where you can take time to enjoy nature, photograph water birds from the hides and walk the short path around the perimeter. Helpful staff will tell you what to look out for. No kingfishers this time so watching the website for news. Cute muntjac though.

A mixed bag. We hadn’t intended to visit, but couldn’t access our intended destination so popped in as it was fairly close.
The positives: friendly welcome in the visitor centre, really enjoyed the first half of our visit, plenty of birds to see (variety and numbers). Highlight was a marsh harrier that flew down and just stood upright and still for ages at the edge of the water. Good hides, good paths, lovely things like the wooden seats by the river.
The negatives: the noise pollution! Some sort of a racetrack nearby, it just didn’t stop! The only thing that drowned it out was the roar of the alternative racetrack of the A414 - which you have no choice but to walk alongside if you make the mistake of going through the one-way turnstile to the wildlife trust area. This also means you have to walk back to the visitor along the road past the sewage works….
Be aware the ‘cafe’ is very limited - teas/coffee machine, crisps, some soft drinks, mass-produced cakes. Fine for a snack, but nothing more. (I did spot Saffron ice creams, which are awesome, but it was too cold today to sample it.)
If we go again we would definitely not go through that gate. By doing so I suspect we missed a chunk of the actual reserve, although I couldn’t see that there was another circular route, I think it would be there-and-back-again.

Hi Rachel,
Thank you so much for your review. We're glad you had a good time on the reserve and hope the positives outweighed the negatives you mentioned (luckily, the karting track you heard doesn't run everyday). We take great pride in our volunteers and their friendliness as well as our hides, paths and seating around the reserve, and to see a Marsh Harrier was really lucky!
We hope you'll come back and visit us again soon.
The Rye Meads team.

Brilliant "Wildlife Wander" with the very knowledgeable Mel. This was the second one I've done (they take place on the 1st Wednesday of the month, currently just October-March but hopefully continuing into the summer) and such a wonderful way to spend a couple of hours. Will definitely be returning next month

I would recommend this great outdoor space if you like wildlife or enjoy photography
It’s a safe environment to loose yourself in relax and take photos or watch the wildlife
Plenty of hides to use and outdoor seating for picnic lunch

Wow! We had a wonderful pond dipping visit with our 3 children.
We visited once for the self led pond dipping and the children absolutely loved it. Despite being self led, a lovely man and lady who worked there engaged with the children and helped them identify the creatures they found. It was set up fantastically with identification sheets for the children to use and all equipment provided for £3! Such a great activity and the children were so engaged and excited.
The children enjoyed it that much that we returned a week later, this time for the guided pond dipping. Ian led the session and was brilliant with the children. He encouraged, supported and taught the children throughout the session. It ended with the children visiting the secret garden and identifying all the different creatures they had found collectively as a group, they also carried out some fun role play activities- pretending to be different creatures. It was so well led, educational and fun!
I would not hesitate to recommend and visit again.
The children are still talking about the newts, back swimmers, stickleback, water louse, water scorpion and blood worms!
The grounds are also lovely and the trail was great for the children. They also had fun looking for birds in the hides.
Great venue and knowledgable staff/ volunteers. Thank you, we look forward to visiting again!

Obviously the Kingfisher is the main attraction to most photographers of late with the fledglings being born . Makes it hard for some to photograph them when many people spending all day in the hide.
Managed to book an off hours slot at a cost of £25 to see the kingfisher which may seem expensive to some but worth the money at a quiet time. Other highlights were a kestrel, muntjac, heron amongst my time there. Would go back again. Staff friendly. Soft drinks overpriced as at any RSPB .

Me and my partner come here often, it’s a great place to see lots of wildlife, and my partner especially loves the photography opportunities, the staff are all so welcoming and lovely and there’s refreshments available to purchase at the entrance, often in half terms and school holiday times they offer pond dipping, and trails for young children, the hides are good and overlook a wide range of wildlife. I recommend a visit to this lovely place for all ages.

I've recently discovered my passion for wildlife photography and have been visiting various places over the past 4 months. Rye Meads is my newly found favourite. I try to go every weekend with my beginners bridge camera & am so happy that there is always so much wildlife to photograph 🙂
I photographed my first Kingfisher here 1 month ago 😃 there are plenty of lovely hides.
The staff are very helpful & there are toilets.

My little girl and I enjoyed a few hours out here in the summer holidays. They had pond dipping available which my little girl loved - the young guy helping out here was very patient and put up with my daughter's endless chatter!
Nice walks and hides to look in plus picnic area, toilets and visitor centre.

A fabulous little reserve tucked in what feels like an industrial estate as you approach its car park but it is a beautiful oasis and has great facilities including a little shop and toilets together with its fantastic hides for bird watching. Definitely worth a visit.

We are due to visit friends in Ware for a week beginning 15th June. Can you tell me if the Kingfishers are still active then, as we’d love to visit the reserve to see them.
Verfasst am 6. Juni 2019
you mean do 'they' I assume - I'm not an employee, just a visitor. I visit regularly, but have never seen nest boxes for sale. Try a nearby garden centre, such as Van Hages, near Ware who sell a wide variety of bird food, feeders, etc.
