If you only have a day to spend in Norfolk, then this is the place to go.
Such a variety of exhibits, showing life in bygone days, some of which I remember!
How farming has changed is fascinating, and seeing the animals.
The workhouse was not all bad, and the system did not end until 1946!
The cafe was good for a midday snack.
The staff throughout are enthusiastic, friendly and knowledgeable.

Spent a good couple of hours at this extremely interesting display and detailed history and photos of what life was like in rural Norfolk in Victorian times if you worked or were poor enough to be sent to a Workhouse. Would highly recommend a visit.

First saw the Grassenhall Farm and Workhouse on an episode of four in a bed, since I was staying a few miles away decided to visit. A lot of history of the workhouse system of the 19th and 20th century, also the Museum of Norfolk Life. Lots to see and do. Also the farm across the road, with some rare breads of cattle. Well worth a visit. Recommended.

It is clear from the other reviews (and that mine is so long!) that this is well worth a visit. We visited for Heritage Day and had a lovely time, and were delighted with everything - it is completely unstuffy, lots to see and do, the grounds and buildings are gorgeous, the old-style shops, forge and cottage were nicely set out and interesting to all ages. The cafe was small but excellent, delicious cherry bakewell :-)
The children we saw were having a great time, trying on clothes, playing with mechanical exhibits and toys, and very interested in everything. The children's playground looked superb (I was tempted by the zipwire myself, but resisted!) They had an interesting demonstration of how old items are cleaned and restored. There is also a farm with tractor tours, you can see the lovely Suffolk Punch workhorses and pigs, cows and calves, chickens, rare breed sheep.
I was sad that a volunteer said (rather disparagingly) that it was only so busy because it was free. I think it is wonderful that when so many families are struggling they have had this lovely experience, which many could not possibly afford. We have seen this place before but the workhouse history etc (and museums in general) are not really our sort of thing, so would not have thought of paying to go in.
So they have not lost out by giving free entry (in fact they have gained, as most visitors would at least visit the cafe!) and everyone will praise it far and wide. Thanks so much to all the volunteers for their hard work.

We visited Gressenhall museum of Norfolk real life as part of the Norfolk heritage open days!
The museum contains many displays and objects from around Norfolk including a recreation of a forge, postoffice and farmhouse!
We found the stories very interesting of the people who lived and worked in the workhouse and thought the virtual interactive screens telling their stories added to the experience!!
We also enjoyed the vehicles and machinery presented in the museum as well as the recreation of the workhouse farm, including rear breads such as the Suffolk punch!

We visited yesterday and we spent all day here. There is so much to see and something of interest for everyone. The museum is incredibly well set out and the farm is a delight.
The Mardler's Rest Cafe [mardler was used to dye material in the olden days] offers good value and lovely fresh food with indoor and outdoor courtyard seating. Alternatively you can bring your own picnic, lots of delightful places to sit.
If you have mobility problems don't worry, they offer wheel chairs and a Tramper mobility scooter. The car park is spacious and even on a busy August day there was plenty of room. Well "brown" signposted from the A47 via B1146, best to avoid the middle of Dereham! The grounds are extensive, and don't miss the farm - again if necessary you can get a lift in their wagon.
Masses for children to do - pick up the leaflets and activity sheets as you go in. They can experience bygone times, even go in a school room, then they can search for stamps or try milking! Prices are reasonable, but if you are local it is well worth buying a Norfolk museums pass.
You will learn so much about how life was like in workhouse days.
On the day we visited lots of happy children were in the woods building camps and shelters and having a truly wonderful time. Look out on the Gressenhall website for all the extra special events they organize - there is a September one when the heavy horses will take a leading role.
Finally - what makes this place so unique and special? - it is the staff - without exception they are all keen for you to enjoy your visit and really go that extra mile to be helpful.
It is a happy place.

Fabulous place to visit with a lovely cafe as well. Very informative of how the workhouses operated.
We took our grandsons and they were a bit in awe of how things used to be back in the day!

Fabulous day out! Very original and not commercial. Kind , helpful and friendly staff. So much to see and do. Took a 4 and 1.5 year old and they loved it. The museum is brilliant for older ones and the farm excellent for all ages. The play area is awesome. Loads of beautiful spaces for picnics and a great cafe and shop. Will be back !

I visited the museum with my daughter-in-law and two grandchildren aged 12 and five. We had previously taken the older one when he was four, so it was a long awaited repeat visit.
I have visited lots of museums far and wide over the years, but believe this is the best museum in the country. It’s a huge part of Britain’s social history and farming from Victorian Times, in its heyday, the workhouse accommodated from 400 to 600 people. Many of them families, with the mothers and young children separated from the men and older boys, only seeing them at church on Sundays. Many men had to leave their families at the workhouse while they travelled to try and find work, having been made unemployed. There is a very poignant statue of a man having to leave his seven children at the workhouse. An amazing piece of art.
So many people nowadays do not realise how hugely important the workhouse system was for those who were poor or unemployed at a time when they were no welfare benefits and no NHS. I am in my sixties and remember my parents taking of families in their youth who ended up in the workhouse and working as a nurse at a hospital that had originally been one. The story of the Museum is brought to life by the tales of its inmates and the displays. There is something for all ages and my young granddaughter who is a real life wire, thoroughly enjoyed her day. We did not think that she would be so keen on the indoor exhibitions and fully expected to cut this part short. However, there was something at every point to keep her amused, including the dressing up clothes and she’s still talking about it two weeks later
The bygones exhibition in the main workhouse and in the cottages outside are excellent. So nice that there are not” do not touch” signs everywhere. It is expected that you will be respectful enough to not damage artefacts on show that are outside of glass cases. I had great fun in the school room explaining to my grandchildren why the desks had inkwells and the punishment we would’ve received at school for perceived misdemeanours. My grandson thought it was hilarious that we were made to stand in the corner with our hands on our heads! Not so funny that we got hit with a cane.
My daughter-in-law and I were able to enjoy a peaceful picnic as once the children had quickly eaten their meal they went off to play with the games that were set out on the grass. We bought drinks from the café which was reasonably stocked and the food that was being served looked very good.
After lunch, we visited the farm which is across the road from the workhouse and where a lot of the inmates would have worked in Victorian times. The museum has six beautiful Suffolk punch horses. Some are used for working and they advertise days when they showcase this in the fields.
We enjoyed the tractor ride around the fields, but sadly they are not so many other animals today, but it is difficult for the museum to regularly have enough volunteers to look after additional animals. There are some pigs, cattle, sheep and chickens. The staff are happy to speak with the visitors and there are informative displays for the adults and interactive set ups where children can have a go at” milking a cow”. My granddaughter had the magic touch and could’ve been an excellent milkmaid!
The children’s play area has been added to since we were last at the museum, and both kids described it as brilliant! It is a play area for all ages with a separate area for toddlers. Certainly the best I’ve come across at a museum.
The museum and farm are great value for money and extremely interesting for all age groups, something that very few museums can actually achieve. It’s sad that the museum is not better advertised nationally or even locally as we only knew it because my daughter-in-law had been there when she was at school. We had arrived at 10:30 in the morning and didn’t leave until 4.45pmin. Very good value for money, a great day out and two tired but very happy grandchildren.,
One week after the visit and the children are still asking questions about the workhouse, so it definitely made an impression

I took my granddaughter who is 5 for a day out during the summer holidays ! We’ve had such a wonderful day out ! Gressenhall is thought provoking and interesting with plenty of interactive things to do ! We ate lunch in the cafe and what a pleasant change the food was freshly prepared and fairly priced most unusual for this kind of tourist attraction ! I would have loved to have gone to the nursing display but it’s not suitable for children her age ! A fantastic day, nothing is to much trouble for the staff working there x

I didn't see anyone cycling around the place but there were pathways so it would be practical in some areas. I wouldn't have thought it would be allowed though on a health and safety basis - risk of collision with children and elderly etc using the paths. I suppose you would be best making enquiries direct. I am sure there are areas where bikes could be secured whilst you visit and the roads around the place are pretty quiet and perfect for cycling I guess.
