Wardown House is in the grounds of Wardown Park which is just off New Bedford Road. It is a short walk from the town centre and is mostly on the flat until you reach the house which is up on a small hill.
The house is free to visit and well worth checking out to explore the history of Luton and the people who lived there. It is free to visit and you can make a donation by cash or card.
The house has two floors to visit and there is a lift for those who struggle with stairs. There are toilets available for all on the ground floor.
Within the billiards room you can play billiards on the electronic billiard table or you can use it to learn more about the town of Luton. There is also a cafe on the ground floor providing hot drinks and snacks. They DO NOT take cash. There are also paintings on the wall to look at.
On the first floor you can learn more about the hat making industry which was part of Luton for a long time. You can also learn about the Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire Regiment and visit the lady's bedroom and bathroom.
The museum is very interactive and child friendly. The people I spoke to were very friendly and welcoming. Well worth a visit.

A little known gem. It's a lovely old house, used as a museum, in a beautiful park with a lake. We lived in St Albans for 40 years without knowing this. Now living in North London, it took only 45 minutes to get here by car. The many trees in the park look about 100 years old, and are big and unspoiled. A walk around the lake and other areas is a real pleasure. The museum is bigger than one would expect, on seeing the house. And it's chock-full of interesting objects. One could easily spend three hours in here alone. Altogether it makes a really nice day out.

My son and I love to visit the cafe at Wardown House Museum, treating ourselves to coffee, cake and a stare out of the window at the gorgeous surroundings. We have often lamented the fact that we can't sit there later in the day with a bottle of chilled white wine. When we saw a leaflet advertising afternoon tea, with Pimms we immediately booked. You do have to book in advance. We arrived and all was waiting for us including a reserved window table. We were served by a charming and totally stunning waitress who made sure we had all we needed including the time to enjoy ourselves. Lots of sandwiches, scones with jam and clotted cream, of course and a good selection of cakes. Sadly the weather did not join in and rained so that we couldn't sit outside. Still this means we will have to go again

Had a lovely afternoon tea. cream scones fresh sandwiches cake etc. You do have to book some way in advance. Better than Luton Hoo and i have had both!

One of the most memorable local museums I have visited. Enough has been retained of the original Victorian mansion, particularly the dining room, now an excellent café, and the bathroom, dressing room (with a fashion display) and bedroom. The paintings on the walls are well chosen; the pair in the bedroom were amusing: "Courtship" and "Matrimony".
Some rooms are devoted to local history; often, to visitors from elsewhere (such as me) this can be impenetrable, but the explanations assumed limited local knowledge. Particularly interesting was the account of the 1919 Peace Day riot, during which the Town Hall was largely destroyed. The military section was picturesque and informative.
The Garden is charming, and the walk from/to the station is delightful and well signposted.

Me and my teenager daughter visited this museum in the summer holidays and we both loved it. The house is beautiful and set with the backdrop of Wardown Park which is lovely to pair with your visit. We both found the insights in to historical Luton life really interesting and we enjoyed the interactive displays. Walking up the stairs to the second floor gives you real feel of historic house. The cafe is very pretty and worth a visit, each table has a display inside and if you get a table near a window you get a lovely view of the park. Would definitely recommend a visit and we will definitely be going back again!

From the moment we entered the museum the staff were so helpful and knowledgeable. The exhibits are imaginatively laid out with lots of information. There is a little “find the mice” search to keep small children entertained. The cafe had a basic but good selection for a light lunch. We also noticed how clean everywhere was.

when i went to Wardown house, i was amazed with the house and its detail to reinstate history, the intricate details take you back in time while the touches of interactions serve modernly, a wonderful experience.

Well worth a visit, if not more than one visit. A beautiful house, full of history. Friendly, helpful staff & volunteers. Well maintained and, amazingly, it is free to enter. The grounds are worth a visit too. Very interesting, relaxing, with play areas for children. The cafe is reasonably priced, the food is nice and there are lovely views over the grounds.

Have been here several times before but our most recent visit was disappointing due to the cafe service. We had been for early mini golf, great little new addition to the site meaning we planned to spend most of the day with our little one at wardown now there’s that as well as house to look round, park and playground. However we ended up leaving after a quick wander round house which unusually had no welcoming staff at entrance. As mentioned in other reviews the cafe is pricey but we planned to have lunch there and as the museum is free understand this is where some of the money is to be made. The cafe had no savoury options at all, this was at 12 midday so we werent late and they had ran out, there were just none on offer. They had signs up saying paninis and sandwiches but actually had none available that day at all just cakes which we didnt want to only feed our 5 yr old. So we got in car and headed down to stockwood discovery centre instead 10 mins away, another great local free option thats great for kids and had much better and friendlier cafe. Next time we head to wardown for the day i’ll take a picnic!

Are small well behaved dogs allowed in the museum cafe?

What's actually in this museum? Luton culture website makes it sound like it's just a tearoom now. Where have all the hatmaking, lace and straw plaiting exhibitions gone to?

It's now been set out as a Victorian house, with exhibits showing how the house would have been lived in. They still have the hat, straw playing, and lace collection there, and there's still part of the old museum upstairs. The tea room is only one room. :)
