The access road is a challenge, to put it mildly. The journey is more than worthwhile. The church is a surprise, given its remote location. Parking is no problem and the church is in excellent condition and it is open to public access. The atmosphere is near unique and the pilgrimage aspect is very clear. Useful booklets are available. The unique survival of the restored shrine is a delight. The ancient yew trees are impressive and the old cock pits are interesting. It is well organised and the contents are worth scrutiny.

Went with my u3a Local History Group. Such a lovely tranquil place to visit and with a very informative conducted tour by the Priest Guardian, Reverend Christine Browne.

Well worth a visit if you’re in the area. It is in the most atmospheric setting surrounded by a circular slate wall with several 2000 year old Yewtrees. The church itself has been very sympathetically renovated.
You drive there up a single track road along a beautiful mountain valley.
I loved it there; it felt ancient and very special.

Well worth taking an hour out to visit this church if you are in the area. The drive or walk to the church itself is spectacular. The setting is breathtaking, at the top of large hill. Unfortunately I couldn't do the pilgrimage walk as planned due to a broken foot so we took the drive from the village, up a couple of miles of single track lanes through the valley (the drive itself was worth the trip) There is plenty of parking when you arrive. The church is beautiful with a well preserved Norman nave which contains the shrine of St Melangell. Also fascinating is the circle of yew trees surrounding the churchyard, some up to 2000 years old suggesting this was a site of religious significance long before the Christians came along. All in all it felt like a truly magical and serene place to spend a quiet half hour or so.

This church is well worth a visit. The atmosphere is so calm and serene, quite a change from the hustle and bustle of life.

A lovely and peaceful place at the head of the valley, surrounded by ancient yew trees and very picturesque. Apart from parking, there are no facilities, but it's a beautiful place for a picnic.

Wonderfully peaceful pilgrimage church at the head of the scenic Tanat Valley. Nice walk to the waterfall.

Pennant Melangell has been a place of Christian pilgrimage for something approaching fifteen hundred years and there are parts of the existing building nearly a thousand years old. The legend from the 6th century is that a local prince was out hunting, and his party raised a hare. They went in hot pursuit and found the hare had taken refuge under the robe of a young woman hermit, Melangell, who'd sought out the quiet valley to live the life of a Christian hermit. Impressed by her - and the hare's instinctive trust of her - the story goes that he gave the valley to her, and over time a religious community gathered around her which she ruled as abbess until her death in 590.
Whatever the truth of the story, Pennant Melangell became a place of pilgrimage across the middle ages, focused on the shrine in the little church in which she was buried. The shrine, like all others in the British Isles, was destroyed in the aftermath of the reformation; but the memory and the legend survived, as did the church building itself, as a little Anglican chapel in the remote countryside.
These days the church building is no longer used for parish worship, but has found a new role as a place of pilgrimage and spiritual healing. There is a pilgrim's centre in an old house nearby, and a full-time chaplain/warden. The church manages to combine being simultaneously a place of worship, an exhibition centre and a bookshop and sales outlet for Christian knick-knacks of one sort ot another with a striking harmony and lack of incongruity!
Well worth a visit if such things speak to you. As a shrine and pilgrimage place, I'd say it's fairly unique - there are of course many such places, but I've not come across anything else quite like this one.

We were lucky enough to be staying at a working farm close by, what an absolute hidden gem and a fantastic historical church which has been updated with photo's and clearly well looked after, it was great to find it open and a place where you could light candles and read about the history. This is a place well worth making the effort to visit. If you walk from the local pub down the hill it's about 2 miles and the views are stunning.

A truly amazing place to visit.The atmosphere,the history and the setting is truly beautiful I would highly recommend anyone to visit.I would how ever recommend to walk instead of going in the car as the road is very narrow and the walk though over 2 miles there and then back it is worth while the walk due to the beautiful scenery.
