It had been a number of years since I’d last patronized Star Cinema; in fact, I was completely unaware they’d undergone a significant renovation. When M and I walked up to the new Star Cinema, I was expecting the old, somewhat small but inviting, establishment I’d been to years earlier. Imagine my surprise, then, when we came upon this lovely new structure! What the heck happened here?!
Well, it turns out that Star Cinema closed for renovations in December 2019 and only just re-opened in late November 2022. Upgrading from two screens to three, and with greater capacity (305 persons), the “new” Star Cinema is located in the exact same space, but is now part of a five-storey, 45-unit condo building (occupying the whole ground floor). Thankfully, the small town vibe and feel is not lost in the new space. Quite the contrary! The staff are still welcoming warm and friendly; the popcorn is served fresh – with some saying it’s the best in greater YYJ; and, you still get great value for money.
In any event, M and I came to Star Cinema to view “Jules” – the cute movie about an alien that crashes into someone’s backyard. Exhibiting simplicity and depth, the film leaves you contemplating some heady questions about life and lived experience while still being light enough for all to enjoy. For me, one of the best parts was the cinema room we watched the film in. I swear, there had to be no more than 20 seats in the whole room. It felt like we were watching the movie in someone’s living space, which was perfect – both in terms of the movie AND concomitantly highlighting Star Cinema’s inviting small town feel.
While I do, in some ways, lament the loss of the “old” Star Cinema, the “new” version has not jettisoned the spirit of its predecessor. And that, for me, is the main thing. It was great to be back here! May the “Star” shine brightly for years to come. . .

A brand new cinema without projectors working. Poor communication as to which films were actually running. Staff lackadaisical and uninterested. Won’t return

This is a small local movie theater. I've been there for Pajama parties, midnight showings and many movies. Sandy and her staff are wonderful, warm and inviting and it shows that they love what they do. The popcorn and coffee is always fresh and the locals are very supportive. Love coming here.

We have been attending the theatre for over a decade and love the small town intimacy of it. Great movies, the best popcorn, good seating.

We say “ditto” to all previous good reviews of the lovely little theatre. Took our grandson to see The Return of Mary Poppins yesterday and the place was full of happy families out for an afternoon of fun. There was even a birthday party group there and the birthday girl got to start the film with the proprietor. Where does that happen these days? It was all dolled up for Christmas and the place was so warm and welcoming. They are moving soon to a temporary location while the building is upgraded but we will still go for the old-fashioned hospitality and first run movies.

The staff here all seem to be personalities......yet very capable. Its lower priced than many modern cinemas, and they do show first run films----many of them a little different from your typical cineplex. Seats were very comfortable. They will apparently be closing down and be given temporary accomodation as a new building housing the cinema is being built. Hopefully it will retain its character.

Star Cinema is located in picaresque Sidney “by the sea.” It isn’t the largest cinema (only two screens), but what it lacks in size it makes up for in customer service and value for money. For starters, the folks who work at this local Sidney landmark are always warm, friendly and welcoming. Once you enter the small lobby you almost feel as though you’ve stepped into someone’s home thanks, in part, to the relaxed atmosphere the staff has been able to create. You certainly don’t get this feeling when you visit Odeon or SilverCity in Victoria. Second, you get great value for money. The cost of movie and snack treats is probably less than half of what you’d pay at the larger Cineplex chains. And the best part? The popcorn is served with REAL butter – not that yellow sludge they try and pass off as butter at Cineplex. In short, Star Cinema offers you a relaxed movie experience, one reflective of the small town you’re visiting.
Beyond the homey feel of Star Cinema, I also like it because it reminds me of another cinema I visited once upon a time: The Aurora Theatre in Lac La Biche, Alberta (closed in 2013 and torn down in 2017). There are strong parallels between both. First, both are/were family-run; second, both have/had a long history in their respective communities; third, both were fairly compact in size and have/had a small number of screens; fourth, both are/were throwbacks to the small town era of cinema. Sadly, small town cinemas have been on a bit of a steep decline in recent years – what with challenges from streaming services, torrents, redevelopment and large multiplexes like Cineplex – so it’s nice to see one doing quite well on Vancouver Island and with good community support.
I’ve only been to Star Cinema a few times, with my most recent visit being in February to watch a childhood favourite, “The Land Before Time.” I mention that because it’s relevant to this review in the sense that it demonstrates Star Cinema has found a good balance. Despite their small number of screens, this wonderful family-run cinema still finds the time to show big Hollywood hits, old favourites and lower key, limited release films. It’s win-win. Families can watch the big hits while film nerds like me can enjoy more “artsy” type films. It truly is a wonderful thing and, because of that, I highly recommend visiting this cinema and “supporting local!”

If you are looking to take in a movie, enjoy Star Cinema, a local place managed by residents of Sidney. This quaint and charming Cinema has that living room feel.

Enjoyed the latest Star Wars movie, while it doesn't have the latest technology or the best seats, the space is comfortable friendly and close. Great to have a small family run Cinema in Sidney. Popcorn is great with real butter!

This family run cinema is really sweet! The movie selections are great and up to date, the snacks are awesome and the atmosphere is really a blast from the past. All ages are considered for movie selections as well. Go for the fun, go for the movie, but go just to experience a smaller cinema that has it all.
