Phenomenonal reserve. A world leading example of wetland habitat creation, lovely ice cream at the visitor centre too. Fabulous wildlife encounters, birds, dragonflies, and generally everything you want from wild fenland.

I am staggered by some of the reviews submitted. This is a nature reserve, and it seemed to us that the RSPB are dong an excellent job here. It was easy to access, the volunteers were friendly and knowledgeable and we very much enjoyed a lengthy, 5 hour stroll round.

Hello Dajtrav,
Thank you for taking the time to review us and your positive comments. We do our best here to support the fenland wildlife and to help people enjoy it. The entrance fees for non-RSPB members and membership support from RSPB members enable us to keep the reserve going, so we are very grateful for the support from people like you and our other visitors.
We hope to welcome you back in the future and thanks again. Heidi

Me and my sister had a great time spotting birds and walking through this fen reserve. It was very windy, which I think might have affected the number of birds we saw!
We were lucky though and saw a Bitten and a Marsh harrier. We also spotted a very pretty lizard on a bench.

Hello,
Thank you for taking the time to review us and I'm very pleased to hear you enjoyed your time here and saw two of our star species- Bittern and Marsh harrier!
It can get fairly windy in the Fens due to the wide open spaces but I hope it's calmer for you if you choose to visit us again.
With best wishes from the team at Lakenheath Fen

I spent a very pleasant few hours here on a sunny day. I am not an RSPB member but thought the entrance fee (£4) very fair. There is plenty of free parking and good facilities - toilets, information, very pleasant and helpful staff and a self serve drinks/snacks area. The Norfolk ice cream was very nice! The reserve is lovely and peaceful, I am not a bird expert, but it was interesting to read the information at the hides. I did the longer, 3 mile walk and returned along the bank beside the river, which was very pleasant. I would recommend for a day out for nature lovers.

Dear Maz1963,
Thank you for taking the time to review us, and for your positive comments. We do our best to support the wildlife here and to provide visitors with ways to connect with the nature here, such as via the footpaths and viewpoints, so it's really heartening when we here someone has enjoyed their visit!
We hope to be able to welcome you back in the future.
With best wishes from the team.

Loved it!
We are staying nearby and wanted to get to the reserve at a sensible time. We arrived at 05:25 and were able to get full access to the reserve, and we went as far as the Joist Fen hide. We heard and saw bittern, and also saw hobby, marsh harrier, bearded tits, reed/sedge/cetti's warblers, shelduck, shoveller, avocet, and many more.
Although we are RSPB members we would gladly have paid the small entrance fee as it is worth EVERY penny. I am amazed to see a preview (further down the page) asking why the RSPB is here; it is very clear how much work and money has been invested in the reserve, and without them there would be very little birdlife.
If you like birding, and you have time, then you must see Lakenheath, but don't forget to call into the NWT Weeting reserve (a couple of miles away) to see the stone curlew, and if you have even more time them make sure you go to Wicken Fen.

Hi Jim,
Thank you very much for taking the time to write such a positive review. It is lovely to read how much you enjoyed the reserve, and we are very glad you saw plenty of wildlife too. Early morning visits are usually rewarding with plenty of good sightings!
Weeting and Wicken are also super places and thank you for recommending those to potential visitors too.
Best wishes,
Heidi

A superb and friendly welcome on arrival. We were given a map of the area and advice on where to walk and what to see.
We saw all sorts of wildlife on our walk which was well signed. Highly recommended. Very pleased that we have become RSPB members.

Hi Chris,
Thank you for leaving such a positive review of your visit. We are very pleased you saw plenty of wildlife and found the reserve accessible. We have more signage projects in the pipeline, so watch this space!
Also, thank you for joining the RSPB as members- we are very grateful for your support and we hope you have many more happy visits here and at other reserves, with your membership.
Best wishes,

Nice reserve. Shame RSPB take over these natural sites and try to monetise everything. Shocked to be asked to pay on entrance to walk around wild land which these charities take over and build on then ask the public to pay for their little visitor centres! Best left as wildland.

Thank you for leaving a review. I am sorry that you feel dissapointed by our presence here- in 1995 when the RSPB bought the land here there was very little wildlife to be seen- it was intensively-farmed agricultural fields with much less wildlife value than it currently has. Because bitterns were on the brink of extinction in the UK then, it was hoped that the intensively-farmed land could be re-wetted and sculpted into a network of reedbed, open areas of water and wet grassland to support the bitterns in their recovery as a breeding species, and to provide homes for a wealth of other wildlife too. What you see when you walk around is not how it was before we as the RSPB got here- it is what we created.
Now the reserve is home to marsh harriers, hobbies, cranes, bearded tits, grasshopper warblers amongst other commoner birds and we are supporting water voles, otters, kingfishers and a myriad of insects and flowers too, many of which are very rare.
The reason we charge a small entrance fee is to support our work as a conservation charity- and given that 90% of our net income is spent on conservation, and that entry fees contribute hugely to this income, hopefully you can see how this conservation wouldn't be possible without supporting our habitat regeneration projects with entry fees. We do offer a membership of the RSPB- starting at £4 per month per adult, so this may be a more financially efficient option for you if you visit more than one RSPB reserve per month.
Thank you again for your review and i'm sorry you feel this way about our work here- though I hope you enjoyed your walk around this transformed arable farmland.
Best wishes, Heidi (Visitor Experience Officer)

A wonderful nature reserve.
The reserve is well spaced out and seems to be a favourite place for many. Totally understandable as to why!
The trails go off in a couple of different directions.
There is a small visitor area, staffed by friendly and informative staff, where you can also get little snack and drinks and a small selection of RSPB "goods". Also a toilet here.

This is an excellent nature-watching site.
Very friendly staff, very well managed reserve, great views and gives fantastic opportunities to see interesting birds.
Over the years visiting this place and my last visit in January 2020 I observed:
Montagu's harrier
Hen herrier
Peregrine
Kestrel
Buzzard
Common crane
Whooper swan
Great Bittern
Barn owl
Cuckoo
Red-footed falcon
Hobby falcon
Marsh harrier
This is a particularly good location for barn owls which can be seen near the visitor center at dusk, and for bitterns, which need luck to be seen, but in the summer they get all over the place. In short, a wonderful experience!

I have been asked if one can get 'one and price' and I don't know if one has to pay to come to Lakenheath - as a Life Fellow I don't pay anyway!

Is it possible for me to obtain one & price?

Hi. The car park is free, the reserve is 3 UK pounds for adults, 1.50 for 5 to 17 year olds and Students 2. If visiting the Visitor centre only, that's free.
They have a website for further information.
