Would not recommend this hike. Visibility very limited. Would only walk half way on this trail and then return and you will seen all of the great views

first time making it to point sublime. Have a 2005 Lexus GX. All stock with a new set of BF Goodrich KO2 tires. Stock size. The forest road had a few rough spots but made it fine. a mile or two into it, I aired down my tires to about 20 psi which helped a lot. Met some others on the road who said this was the worst they ever saw the road. Got there around noon, and there was a 'trail approved' jeep grand cherokee. He said he took the alternate route because of the shape of the road but he found it beautiful. that said, the short route was beautiful as you go through open fields and aspen groves. fall colors.

We saw a T-shirt in a tourist shop that asked this question.....a question neither of us understood until we stood at Point Sublime and my husband suddenly turned and, with a twinkle in his eye, asked "Why are you whispering on the Rim?" To stand on this ground in THIS place.....is to know the overwhelming Power of the Creator......and be awed to the point of whispering without even realizing it... just as you do in church....at the artistry in HIs Creation. Point Sublime is, truly, a Bucket List destination.

My wife and I drove out to Point Sublime on October 25, 2018, and it was absolutely incredible. We made it just in time for sunset, and the experience of being completely alone to enjoy the sunset at one of the best viewpoints of the Grand Canyon is a memory I will treasure forever. I never would have dreamed an experience like that was possible at such a famous place as the Grand Canyon.
That being said, there is a reason why this place is seldom visited, especially in the off-season at the North Rim. It requires an 18 mile drive over a rough back country road which requires a high clearance, preferably four-wheel drive vehicle.
According to the rangers at the back country office, nobody had been there in at least a week, and a recent snow storm left the possibility of downed trees blocking the road. This indeed proved to be the case, as I had to move two fallen trees I encountered before I could proceed. One was easily moved by hand, but the other required the winch on my Jeep to pull it off the road. Fortunately neither required a saw, as I didn't have one, but I would definitely bring a saw in the future.
Other than the fallen trees, the road was an easy four-wheel drive trail. I'd rate it as probably a 2-3 on a typical 10 point rating system. There were some ruts and a few mildly rocky sections, as well as frequent deep puddles. Most of these had solid bottoms, but a few were somewhat muddy and a less equipped vehicle could be at risk of getting bogged.
I ran the road from the main North Rim visitor center area to Point Sublime in about 1.5 hours, including two stops to clear downed trees. Most people will want to take it considerably slower, but we were in a built-up Jeep and were rushing to get there in time for sunset. We then left via the route to the north, exiting the park through the Kaibab National Forest back out to the highway. That route has about 15 miles of 4WD road similar to the track in, and then about another 15 miles on graded gravel roads before reaching pavement. If you plan on catching sunset and then driving out after dark like we did, I highly recommend a good set of off-road lights.
I highly recommend Point Sublime as one of the best places to see at the Grand Canyon. If you can visit in the off season like we did, you will almost certainly be the only ones there. Just make sure you have a capable 4x4 vehicle and sufficient off-road driving experience to be able to deal with any obstacles you may encounter like downed trees. A saw and a winch could come in very handy. Less capable vehicles like a Subaru Forester or a Kia Sorento (my previous car before the Jeep) could probably make it under most conditions, but it would be riskier. If your vehicle can make it, you will certainly enjoy the experience!

The road had only opened for the season 5 days before our trip. If you plan to camp overnight make sure you stop at the back country office to purchase a permit $10.00 and campsite fee $8.00 before heading out. There are only two campsites so you may want to make reservations in advance. The ranger can also give you an idea of the current conditions. There was a lot of deadfall and it was recommended to take a chainsaw and fuel, along with recovery gear to move trees off the trail. We were able to get through in our pickup with an Alaskan camper on the back. At 21 feet, I wouldn't try it with a longer vehicle. We didn't have to back up on the tight switchbacks but really needed to take our time to carefully pick our line to avoid damage to the camper. The trail is very narrow in some locations, and at least in mid May, pretty rough and washed out from the spring runoff as the park ranger had warned. There was some mud, but had there been a rainstorm it would have made the trail more difficult. A tow bill would be very expensive, so go prepared and understand the possible problems before going. Great location to visit. We were there May 20th - 21st, 2018 and at that time the most direct route 18 miles was in worse shape than the longer northern route out. Both took about the same time to navigate, plan on 2 - 2.5 hours each way in daylight on dry trail.

The Park Service is not kidding when they say the Pt. Sublime road is "Primitive". It is the roughest road I've ever taken a 4-wheeled vehicle on (wish I had taken my Kawasaki trail bike). Steep, rocky, rough, and narrow. My 2WD Toyota truck was ok but I was lucky to not damage a tire on the sharp rocks.
But once you arrive at the Point the view is absolutely fantastic. And odds are you will have the place to yourself.
Upon leaving the Point we took the Northern route, twice as long, but much less rough and it dumps you back on Rt. 67 just North of the Park entrance.

I have heard reference to the Grand Slam Viewpoints of the North Rim: Bright Angel Point, Cape Royal, Toroweap and Point Sublime. I have been to the other three, Point Sublime was last on my list. I came in on Forest Road 22 near the Demotte Campground. On to road 268, 223, 270... make sure you know your route before you go in this way. I exited the more "traditional" route that returned me to Hwy 67 near the Kaibab Trailhead. I think I prefer the Forest Road 22 route because the travel was a little faster, it may be a little longer. Neither route required 4x4, more so, you just need a little bit of clearance in places. Carefully driven, a passenger car could get there either way. If it has rained recently, there could be trouble. I was in a Ford F-150.
The view was spectacular. A couple showed up right after I got there. They didn't even come down to the amazing viewpoint. Right before sunset 2 other couples showed up. After that I had it to myself. I spent the night out there. There is no toilet or any other facilities. There are several picnic tables. Sunrise was not as spectacular as sunset. I am a wannabe hack photographer, check out my pics.

We only had the one night in the park and were told to take the tram out get a good view. We asked the bus driver and he said to get off here. Less crowded than the last stop and stunning views and boy was he right. As the minutes ticked away the view changed. We didn't get a glorious sun set but it was very quiet and pretty

We got a new BMW x3 and thought we'd go there. Stopped at the back country office and they recommended we not try it this year and recommended fire point instead. We went to fire point. The x3 awd did my just fine, but we certainly needed the awd. Great overlook, but do not try it in a car.

I have a Silverado 1500 and a small 16 foot travel trailer with 7in ground clearance. Will I have too much trouble getting to point sublime? I have 4wd experience and all necessary gear

I wouldn’t attempt it with a trailer. I did it in a quad cab long bed with a bed mounted camper and that was a stretch...

Hi! We are heading to the North Rim sometime in mid to late September and want to ride to Point Sublime on our BMW GS dual sport motorcycles. I have heard the road can be really almost impassible in places for vehicles, but what about for an off road motorcycle? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Just wondering where Is the backcountry ranger station? Just wondering where I get my pass and where the entrance is.

About a mile north of the hotel...on the west side of the road in a cul de sac. Easy to find and is marked with signage. Definitely worth the stop even if you are not going to Point Sublime. The ranger has all kinds of good info about "back country" on the North Rim.

I believe so and most likely would be a rough but fun trip. Be prepared though with a saw, water and spare tire...you may need all the above. Worth the trip though...

I have a Honda CRV. Do you think that would do okay?
Verfasst am 21. Juli 2015
I would think probably so, but stop in the back country office and talk to the ranger on duty.

I have a stock 2006 jeep grand cherokee laredo 4x4. Would this jeep have enough clearance for the trail? I have never seen the grand canyon before and I am thinking of going in August.
I hope someone could help me out and let me know if I can make the trip. My ground clearance is 8.5 inches and my wheel base is 9 ft. Thank you for your help!
Verfasst am 27. Mai 2015
Yes...just go slow and pick your spot where your wheels will travel...
