Sitiuated at a distance of about 40 kilometre from Una the district headquarters, Amlehar is a picturesque place studded in the lap of the culminating ridge of Jaswan Dhar which commences near Talwara and forms the border between Una and Kangra districts. Amlehar is known as Thakurdwara also in the area and the background story as to why it is so, is very interesting. It is alleged that one Thakur Dass was incharge of the female apartment of Maharaja Ranjit Singh and was in the good books of one of the Rani. Feeling jealous of his nearness to the Rani envious colleagues complained to the Maharaja that Thakur Dass was having illegal relations with the Rani. To save himself from the wrath of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, Thakur Dass left hurriedly. And in search of some proper and safe shelter he reached this spot where during those days a highly spiritual saint Achyutanand from South was having his hermitage. Thakur Dass was asked to shed his fear. In the meanwhile the infuriated Maharaja also reached Amlehar in search of Thakur Dass. Enchanted by the spiritual marvels of Mahatma Achyutanand Maharaja Ranjit Singh agreed to give remission to Thakur Dass. Highly impressed and moved by the greatness of the Mahatma, Thakur Dass who got himself initiated and later on took over the charge of the ‘Ashram’ (hermitage) and was named Thakuranand. It is also alleged that Maharaja Ranjit Singh who due to the blessings and benedictions of the Mahatma became victorious in Kabul brought 108 severed heads of Pathan soldiers as an offering, which are buried under a platform built around an ‘imli-tree’. Besides getting a temple constructed within the ashram premises Maharaja attached a jagir of 80 ghumaon land also. In the mahant tradition Thakuranand was succeded by Kesarianand, Keshavanand and Kundanand. But later on in view of the mis-management of ‘ashram‘ it was attached with Dera Baba Rudranand of Nari Village. And as such the ‘ashram’ (Dera) at Amlehar is the main branch of Dera Baba Rudranand where an ‘akhand dhuna’ is constantly burning since the time of its coming into the fold of Dera Baba Rudranand.
There is also an akhand dhoona at this place which is believed to have been burning since 1850.
