I have served in Belize for six years as a missionary. I have spent a lot of time working in the villages and with the people of this amazing nation. I recently took a group of high school students on a tour to Eladio's so that they could see an organic cacao farm in full operation and see chocolate made the same way as the ancient Mayans. This a a tour that is 100% genuine. It is not a tourist trap. Every building from the foundational posts to the poles, thatch, and wis, are made from the same materials you would expect to see in a village setting untainted by the expectations of tourists. Set in the hills of San Pedro Columbia, the Eladio family warmly welcomes you into their world, as it really is. The patriarch, Mr. Eladio, an old Mayan Indian of 60+ years, took us on a walking tour of his farm. The walk lasted for more than an hour. During the tour, he shared his wisdom and his personal story of being raised poor with little education but with a strong desire to have a successful farm. He attributes his success to a loving mother, and to reading the Bible, which he says told him to work hard and learn from nature. From nature he said he learned that everything big and small all works together to create the things man needs. For example, bats bring seeds to the farm and squirrels plant seeds. A nearby, stingless bee hive provides pollination for his plants. Worms and bacteria make the soil good for all the plants. Eladio was quick to show us several medicinal plants and a tree that makes natural soap. He allowed us to partake of different fruit from trees all growing naturally along the trail.
After the walking tour we were greeted by other family members who fed us a lunch of chicken caldo with rice and corn tortillas. The drink for the meal was a warm cacao drink. Again, I can't stress enough to the wary traveler, that the meal was 100% genuine . Nothing is fake or boxed.
After the meal, we were given a full demonstration on the making of chocolate from the cacoa bean. We watched the roasting process, the making of the nibs, the breaking down of the nibs on the traditional metate Maya stone, into a buttery soft and silky smooth chocolate paste. This was used to make a drink for us which was served in a calabash dish. We were also given samples of chocolate candy which again was made from the traditional processes.
I feel very confident in highly recommending this tour and family to anyone who is seeking to know and understand a small part of traditional ancient Mayan people.

Elodia and his family are all about cacao and chocolate. The energetic 65 year old patriarch farmer is passionate about his farm, having taken it from a slash-and-burn field to a lush forest during his 45 years of farming. He takes you thru the forest of cacao trees mixed with other fruits and lots of medicinal plants. He'll tell you about all of the illnesses he has been able to treat with the products of his forest. After the vigorous walking tour, we were schooled in how to turn the cacao beans into pure , silky, 100% chocolate and in how the Mayans drink it. Finally, a traditional Mayan lunch is prepared by the matriarch of the family and served with refreshing fresh-squeezed limeade.
The chocolate products are delicious!
This was a spur of the moment trip, but came off as a well-planned tour thanks to the efforts of multiple of Elodia's family members. You'll need decent shoes and a fair amount of energy to enjoy the hike through the farm.

My god this was the best tour I’ve ever taken! Our family of four, including two teenage daughters, we were thrilled to walk the farm, learn about the huge variety of crops, and sample some of the fruit and plants in the fields.
We then had a chance to learn about the cacao bean processing and had some awesome chocolate and hot chocolate.
Lunch was beyond amazing!
Most importantly we were treated as guests and friends by Eladio, his son Feliciano, and his daughter in law Victoria. These folks are terrific.
We all enjoyed this tour and have marked it as a favourite in Belize. We have seen so much in the country from snorkeling Hol Chan, tiptoeing the ATM cave, walking among the giants in Tikal (Guatemala), and much more. Yet this experience is so personal, so informative and just awesome for people of all ages. Please go here and support Eladio if you are anywhere close. It would also make for a great day trip from Placencia or even Hopkins.

Visiting Eladio’s farm was one of the highlights of our family’s trip to Belize. Eladio and his family are kind and welcoming, and their love and respect for nature really comes through. Our family, including two young kids, particularly enjoyed trying the fruit of the cacao pod and bananas fresh off the tree during our jungle walk. My husband and I also enjoyed sampling the ginger and heart of palm we encountered. We loved watching the leaf cutter ants and hearing how Eladio lives in harmony with the animals. Lunch (especially the lime juice) and the chocolate making lesson were a hit with the whole family. This was a priceless experience in Southern Belize!

Eladio’s authentic Mayan culture cacao farm tour was the best! Ok, we only did one but I’m glad we did. We walked around the land with Eladio and his nephew and learned about all the plants and how he helps them thrive. He picked us natural snacks along the way. This is an organic farm, but more like permaculture. His oldest daughter showed us how they roast and grind the cacao nibs, we helped and had traditional hot cacao drink. Meanwhile, their grandma made us lunch - delicious chicken soup and homemade lime juice! The whole family was super friendly.
This wasn’t marked on a map (didn’t know it was on TripAdvisor because we were looking for “Eladio’s” and not “Agouti”) so we asked locals along the way. The road is rough but we were ok in our rental car sedan. We parked at the main house, then the nephew got in the car with us to take us to the farm to find Eladio.
Really wonderful day!

This was a wonderful day trip from Placencia and we included a tour of Lubaanatun afterwards. Eladio and his family are some of the friendliest and gracious people you will meet. Farming will never be the same after Eladio provides his tour and shares the blessings he has received as he farms. As a result his farm is far different than what I expected when I envision farming and orchards. This difference is one that makes this tour a must do. Eladio lives off the land and his family shares their knowledge with you.
If you are met at the small store in town by a couple of young men (ages 10 &12) who tell you they are your tour guides - believe them! Unfortunately I left them ‘in the dust’ only to find out a few minutes later when they met up with us at Eladio’s that they truly are a part of your tour.
Our family will never look at a chocolate bar the same way after you gain an appreciation for the growth and cultivation of cacao beans. Being able to grind and help make our own cacao drink is truly a unique experience. The lunch provided is delicious and provides an authentic meal to enhance your experience. Take the time to drive there when you’re in Placencia as it’s just over two hours drive time with beautiful countryside to enjoy. Make sure you follow the signs for Eladio when you get to the intersection where you turn left for Punta Gorda and you need to go right for Eladio’s. He has a small sign at the intersection. Then several miles down the paved road you will turn off the highway to San Pedro Columbia on a dirt road. Again, Eladio has a sign there indicating that is where you are to turn at. Pass the sign in town for the road going to Lubaanatum and the small road to Eladio’s will be on the right in approximately a quarter mile. Enjoy and have a terrific time.

When we arrived at the farm, we were met by one of Eladio's grandchildren, a wonderful young host who escorted us through the trails to where Eladio was working that morning. Meeting Eladio and hearing his passion for his farm and his way of life was quite the experience. We hiked around the farm with Eladio and he taught us a great deal about his philosophy on working the land, about the various plants and animals in the area, and occasionally disappeared in to the jungle before returning a minute later with something to taste -- cucumber, okra, jalapeno, palm, and so on. Definitely worth heading out to the farm just for that experience.
However, after the walk with Eladio, we went back to the farmhouse area and had a really fantastic lunch of chicken in a broth loaded with local vegetables and a fantastic fresh lime juice (that was very welcome after a long walk on a hot day).
After lunch, we did the chocolate demonstration and Victoria, our host and instructor, was really wonderful as well. We went through the process from roasting the cacao to making a chocolate drink. The entire day was a great experience. Don't leave the area without doing it.

Most people skip the villages on their way from punta gorda to the north. To bad, because this is and amazing experience!
We stayed for one night at Agouti cacoa farm and learn a lot about farming on a very natural way. We started with a fresh lunch and a dip in the bleu river. After we learned how to make chocolate on the traditional way. The proces from the Cacao fruit to the chocolate or Chocolate drink is very interesting! We could smell, taste and try in every step of the process!
The owner (Elaido Pop) gave us a very passionated tour through his 32 acre farm. Wich was for us more like a jungle then a farm, but thats the way Elaido is farming. He's one with the nature and learned us a lot about all the plants and animals and how important it is that you dont only take from nature, but also give something back!
When we arrived back at his house we got a nice warm meal and after a nice conversation with the family, everyone went to bed early.
The room is basic but very clean, and the bed is very comfortable. Ofcourse there is no private toilet and shower, but you want to experience the true Maya farming life, right?
You can watsap Elaido a day before, his number is +5016240166
The price we had on november 2017 was:
Farm tour 40blz each
Chocolate making 40blz each
Lunch 20blz each
Diner 10blz each
Breakfast 10blz each
Guesthouse 50blz per night
Full day hike incl kanoeing 75blz each
Your money goes directly to the family with 15 children, so we felt good about it!
You can really easily reach the farm by local bus. The drivers in Belize are very helpful, (and ofcourse speak English) they will point you when to get out. Farm is only 5 minutes walking from the corner where the bus will drop you off.
So get off the beaten track and step into real Maya life for a day or two!

It’s not on google...Put San Pedro Columbia in your navigation then when there’s a fork in the road, stop to ask people you see and they’ll tell you the way. You’ll pass the road to Lumbaatan.
