After a grueling flight, this quiet place above the Ayung River was an ideal place to sleep and recharge. Most of the time I was the only guest in the small cluster of old teak Javanese houses with names that reflect their roof styles. These small houses are very popular because they are built to be dismantled and moved (no nails!) so they can be easy and cheap to buy in Java, have shipped to Bali & reconstructed. The British and American owners at Pondok Wahyu have collected several different styles of these small houses and reassembled them creatively, adding plumbing, electricity, windows and decking, and setting them in beautiful gardens. The passionfruit laden arbor was fragrant and exquisite.
Pondok Wahyu feels more like a yoga retreat than a Balinese inn because most of the time there was no sign of people going about their daily life, attending to your needs even when you didn't have any. The Balinese are intensely communal and I have never before stayed in a place ... mehr
