From a water-taxi station in the village there are regular boats to ferry passengers back and forth to either the historic city of Santander or the cool surf-beach town of Somo. There is plenty to explore in Santander but we struggled to get the kids away from Somo beach - where there are also plenty of bars and restaurants to keep the grown ups happy too.
We got to Spain via the Portsmouth-Santander ferry which allowed us to take our car, this meant getting there was pretty effortless (the ferry is a 25 minute drive from Pedrena) and we were also able to explore the region at our leisure, with its spectacular scenery and many beautiful secluded beaches.
There are shops and restaurants in the friendly village of Pedrena (a larger supermarket is down the road just past Somo) so you can be self-sufficient without driving - but take a phrase-book as this is real Spain and you will not hear much English spoken.
