Winding down and adapting to a holiday pace of life is all very well, however trying to get served at Copperhill bar is taking 'laid back service' way too seriously. Ordering 2 drinks at 9pm on New Year's eve (= the bar area being far from overcrowded) took 4 attempts with an overall waiting time of 40 minutes. Bar staff were untrained and, with a few exceptions, not particularly friendly, incapable of multitasking, clueless about the drinks menu and very, very, very slow.
Experience in the restaurant was similar in pace and professionalism (table reservation was lost and then waited for an hour 'til the starter arrived). Food however was good, waitress friendly and service oriented, taking a glass of wine off our bill to apologise for the long wait without being asked. They also seem to have a problem with housekeeping, rooms were not really tidied, albeit the beds were made. They were extremely stingy in providing new towels and refilling the toiletries. It is all very well looking after the environment by economising on laundry, however, expecting guest in a hotel of this price bracket to take their room towels to use in the spa and sauna is not the way forward. We took our small towels and left them in the sauna afterwards - and it took three days for them to be replaced in the room (and then only one of them).
We stayed for a week in late December/early January and the hotel was very full with mainly well heeled Swedish families with an average of three kids. This seems to be the main target group the hotel is aiming for. As a result the lobby, pool area was crowded with little ones. If one was looking for a calm, relaxing mountain retreat then Coopperhill would not be the best place to stay.
On the positive side: the Copperhill is the first hotel that we stayed in that managed to create an atmosphere in the hotel lobby which invited people to sit and lounge. Lots of comfy sofas, free wifi, design books on the coffee tables. As a result the lobby was always nicely busy and lively, inviting to sit and read a book or have a chat. Musical entertainment it the evening was good quality, there is however a limit to renditions of Simon and Garfunkel that one can take in a week...
We loved the hotel's design, beautiful lobby, our 'bronze room' succeed in being both minimalist and comfortable, the pool was very nice and we appreciated the 'quiet time' when no kids were supposed to be in it. The hotel staff were all pleasant and smiley (with the exception of the bar crew). We had a good time, overall.
To sum it up Copperhill would certainly have the right 'foundations' to be a really, really good place to stay, however poorly trained staff and a distinct lack of attention to detail are a bit of a let-down, in particular given the price bracket, which is a shame. Investing in staff training to get service standards to meet the design would be a good idea.
