CAREFUL – this ranch will get you addicted!
It was just meant to be a good-bye vacation. After 3 years of life on the New Jersey coast I moved back to Germany in 2007. As none of my friends had the time or money to travel with me I was looking for a vacation that would be fun on my own and where I would meet likeminded people. I remembered that I liked riding as a kid even if it was only a sporadic thing back then. So I decided: Why not be a cowgirl for a week. I came across “Bucking S” by chance. I liked that they accommodate a maximum of 12 guests at a time and that there is only one arrival and departure day a week. That way the group stays together for the whole week. It was also important to me that it is a working cattle ranch, and not just a show ranch for tourist entertainment. When I arrived I was overwhelmed by the landscape. So far I knew these wide open spaces only from films. My living quarters consisted of a large, nicely decorated room with an ensuite bathroom in one half of a log-cabin. I immediately felt at home. During the very yummy dinner then the first contacts with the other guests. We were a mixed bunch of couples and single travellers who had a lot of fun together in the week that lay ahead. The first day we were allocated to our horses depending on previous riding experience and could test them in the arena. Whoever had problems with their horse and/or saddle could switch to a different one until the right combination was found for everybody. In the afternoon we went on our first ride out in the countryside. Of course the highlights of the week were the days we actually moved cows. Whoever expects wild galloping will be disappointed. The cows shouldn’t be stressed so most of the cattle work is done walking. But in between there are always opportunities to trot and canter. I rank myself among the beginners when it comes to riding and was slightly worried that my riding abilities wouldn’t be good enough for the ranch activities. But I worried for no reason. Even on all day rides I had no problems to keep up. The wranglers are always considerate of the weakest riders and the horses are so well trained, calm and sure-footed that nobody has to be afraid. I could fill many pages now with great stories of my time on “The Bucking S” ranch but really: You should go and experience it for yourself. For me it wasn’t over and done with that first vacation. Last year in autumn I returned for the gathering of the cows before they were moved down the mountain in trucks to their winter quarters. And my longing for the ranch is still so great that I will travel to Wyoming for the 3rd time this year.
