Rating this property is difficult. If you've been to Culebra you know that its a no frills island, not a developed resort town like other islands in the region - so just comparing this property to others on the island I would have to say its one of the better ones. If you've been to other local islands then this rental is average, but that could easily be improved with a few changes.
We initially had difficulty finding the house, it was dark by the time we landed and acquired groceries, there are no street signs in Culebra (: We tried contacting the caretaker for assistance but never received a response. By sheer luck we ended up on the road with the house and recognized the fence described in the directions. When we arrived at the property we found that it wasn't clean, just tidy. You're on an island, you can expect bugs, I just wish that they were cleaned up regularly, we found them in every corner and window sill.
The house is easily cooled during the day by opening the windows and doors and letting the island breeze in but during the dusk hours it's helpful to close up and avoid attracting every mosquito in town. We turned on the A/C units an hour before bedtime to cool the rooms and quickly found that the back bedroom became extremely musty/moldy smelling. We couldn't put one of our kids in there like that and without the A/C it would be uncomfortable to sleep in; so we had to push the twin beds together in the other room and have all 3 kids sleep across the beds. Within 2 days we also realized that the refrigerator wasn't keeping anything cold so we lost a fair amount of the groceries we had purchased. The property does have wifi but the connection on the island is very slow so sending emails was difficult. By Tuesday night Kavita checked in and we were able to get out an email to respond to her to let her know of these two issues and a few other minor issues we were experiencing. She promptly replied stating they would be resolved and they were. Ricky, the caretaker, arrived early the next morning to look at the refrigerator and the A/C unit. The frig wasn't salvageable and we ended up having to borrow the mini frig from the Studio rental. We did get a sneak peek at that property and I have to say it looked really nice, if I was traveling as a couple I would love to stay there. Unfortunately I also realized it hadn't been cleaned since the last occupants were there, for example their linens were laying around and their forgotten shoes were still laying on the porch.
Ricky ended up having to take the A/C unit out of the window with the assistance of my fiance and taking it to town to have it power washed. He returned it later that day and it resolved the smell issue and that bedroom was finally usable. For the 5 of us we found that the property was short on utensils so we ended up having to borrow a few things from the Studio. The linens could use an upgrade and the pillows and mattresses were really flat. A clothesline for drying towels would be really helpful.
Kavita was awesome at following up to ensure our issues were resolved and from what I understand she only recently acquired the property and is still working on fixing some of the areas that I mentioned. I have no doubt that once she does this, it will easily be a 'very good' and easily the best rental on Culebra.
