On our past visits to Vicksburg, Mississippi, my wife and I have always made it a point to tour the Linden Plantation Gardens. Not this time. Or ever again. "One of the loveliest landscapes in America," as it has been described, the Vick family's pride and joy has stopped conducting tours of the eight acres of lavish grounds and has closed the Bed-and-Breakfast due to health issues caused by COVID-19. Located at 505 Duncan Road, southeast of Vicksburg, Follow a sunken road back in time to visit an 1820s plantation founded by the Vick family that founded Vicksburg and passed down through four generations to the present owners. There is so much to see and smell...a 1790 Creole plantation home with furniture, china and paintings from the original period, over 750 azaleas leading to a formal entrance that is flanked by four 160-year-old magnolia trees. In this garden-like atmosphere, Union troops once camped when marching to Vicksburg in 1863 and tended their wounded following battles at nearby Champions Hill, Raymond and Big Black River. The Linden plantation dates to 1827 but the formal gardens were created out of cow pastures in 1994, then opened to the public. Like many of the historic relics of the antebellum south, they are gone with the wind.

Linden Plantation in Vicksburg, Mississippi, was established in 1827 by John Wesley Vick, the son of the Rev. Newitt Vick, who founded Vicksburg. Vick's wife Anne Marie died in childbirth and Vick moved into Vicksburg. Anne Marie's brother James and his wife Roche assumed ownership of Linden in 1840. Roche was the estate's first great gardener. She created 12 acres of formal gardens on the grounds and the magnolias she planted in 1847 still flank the entrance to the present house. Eastern Red Cedars planted during the same period to form the nucleus of a 1/4-acre botanical garden. Today, visitors follow a sunken road back in time to visit the 1820s plantation. Over 750 azaleas lead you down the formal driveway to the entrance flanked by four 160-year-old magnolias. In 1994, cow pastures were converted into eight acres of formal gardens. The present home is modeled after 1790 Creole Plantation designs and features furniture, china and paintings from the original period. To reach Linden, take US Highway 80 east to State Highway 27. Go south to Scott Road, turn left onto Mount Alban Road, then right onto Duncan Road. Linden is a half-mile on the right.

While we didn't get off the bus to stroll the grounds we did stop in the main drive and get an overview from the tour guide. You could see in its time, it was a stately mansion and one of the nice places to hang out back in the day!

This was "billed" as a garden tour. Our hostess (the home owner whose husband's family has owned the property for several generations) was most inviting and interesting. They built the home on the site of a family home about 20? years ago and the furnishings and décor are very interesting. I enjoyed the Gardens (tho our guides were not especially knowledgeable re the plant materials, etc.) and the story of their design. This is, overall, a lovely most welcoming home off the beaten path. Do not expect a formal garden laid out with rare plants and manicured to "an inch of its life"; that would not be appropriate here. Overall I felt as it I had spent time with a long time friend and that made it a perfect visit.

We were expecting an antebellum period tour with a heavy emphasis on the gardens. Instead the period of the home was closer to that of the 1930s and 1940s. I can't say anything horrible about the experience, but it wasn't what we were expecting. Our host was extremely kind and very knowledgeable, but he rambled about his family history more than talk about the workings of the plantation. The gardens are cute, but not as vast as they appear in pictures. Would recommend, but be ready to do a lot of listening.

Follow directions from Joy to the plantation and noy your GPS. Have Bryan tell you of his family history as he dhows you about the house and gardens. His trophys from hunting occupy the small cabin rented out to B&B guest. A real treat off he beaten path

We had a very nice tour of this beautiful home. The tour guide and owner of the plantation was very nice and informative. There is beautiful antique furniture and an abundance of information on the property, family and area. Our family of 7 had a very nice time and felt the afternoon was well spent. The gentleman was very patient with my child, answering every question that he had. We did the tour only, did not stay in the cabin, but nevertheless, we had a wonderful afternoon there.

We felt the tour was over priced, the gardens unkept (maybe due to health and over work) but the herb garden was nice, the ruins garden a novelity, the cabin was not somewhere i would want to spent the night. The host did ramble - altho' at times interesting......... Would not recommend....... I have toured many places, including Natchez.........Aug. 2012
Tipp:We only did the tour - but i would not choose to stay here.
