Lovely museum, interactive, interesting and frankly amazing. It is amazing how the migrants built and sailed ships as well as used all aspects of the fishing industry to sustain the economy. It can be a half hour or 2 hour visit.

Great visit with Canadian cousins. The museum’s space is in a firmer schoolroom. there are many many photos and written information. we also enjoyed the friendly docent and went on to take a brief look at the cemetery then stroll down to the working look at the shipyard.

We loved the hands-on and up-close experiences - both inside the museum and outside among the various buildings. It is a fascinating place and you can take your time to move through all of it. We lucked out to arrive just as they opened, prior to the tour bus group. Oh! And the staff is lovely and very knowledgeable.

Small museum with some exhibits inside. Several outdoor exhibits too see also. It’s supposed to be a working shipyard but we didn’t see much going on.

I really enjoyed the guided tour given by Justin Demetri. He grew up in and still lives in the Gloucester area, and is very knowledgeable about how Essex became a famous shipbuilding center. He has such a wealth of knowledge about and passion for shipbuilding, fishing, seafood, schooner / sailboat racing, and the history of the Cape Ann area, Rockport, Gloucester, Essex, Ipswich MA.
He answered many questions I had about the dangers faced by fishermen.
For example, during the Civil War, Gloucester lost more men in fishing accidents than on the battlefield. Justin gave vivid examples of how dangerous it was for them to climb out on the bowsprit pole at the front of the ship to adjust the sails, said this was known as "the widow maker," and how some new ships (but not all) were re-designed to save the lives of fishermen by making them longer in the front (with no bowsprit) so that the fishermen would be standing on the ship deck when they were adjusting the sails.
The Essex Shipbuilding Museum also has an impressive collection of ship models, including some on loan from the Smithsonian.
Recommend you call first to find out times of the guided tours for that day. I took the 3 pm tour, which lasted almost 2 hours (partly because I asked so many questions).
Justin told so many interesting stories that made the history of wooden shipbuilding come alive, and I hope to come back with my family someday to the Essex Shipbuilding Museum so they can share the same experience.

This is a modest location and building. The shipyard is really interesting with all phases of the local shipbuilding. A must for all people who like anything and everything maritime.

This was part of our Road Scholar tour of the area. It really is a great place. The curator of the outdoor museum gave us a guided tour of the old wooden ship that is there, lots of old shipbuilding implements with a show and tell about them. Film was not very interesting. When we walked to see the small museum it was in a deconsecrated church and there was a small graveyard. We also got a talk about the graveyard and gravestones that was very interesting.

Small museum packed with lots of information about the history of the area and shipbuilding. We had an excellent docent tour who really knew so much. We walked through a shipyard which had a number of vintage ships, and also up to an old school house that had more antique objects. It is nice they also have a ship building program for local school kids to try to continue some hands on experience in ship building, making large row boats the get to use. My husband, an engineer and pilot was really engrossed in many of the building processes and materials. I would highly recommend paying a few extra $ for the tour.

Would a person using a walker be able to do the tour? Are there frequent places he'd be able to sit?

I don't think it would be a problem. The indoor part is very small, 3 rooms. One houses displays, one has the counter where you pay and pick up literature. The third is a video viewing area with chairs. Outside there is room enough to get around and view the ship and the shipbuilding area. It's small, not a lot of walking.
